Greetings from Matapalo! Without a doubt, the past two months have been two of our busiest months in 2019. However, many great rewards have come from all of our hard work. Our highlights include celebrating our three year anniversary, inaugurating the new multi-court sports complex, and kicking off another major new infrastructure project. We are grateful to have the opportunity to make a difference everyday through our work here in Matapalo, and we are in gratitude to the supporters who make this work possible.

We thank you for taking the time to learn about the impact that we are making in rural Costa Rica, and as always we invite you to join us in our mission to "enrich lives for a brilliant future"

With gratitude,

Lindsay Losasso
Executive Director
Inauguration of the New Matapalo Multi-Purpose Sports Courts
On Sunday, September 1, we were thrilled to celebrate the inauguration of the new multi-purpose sports courts in Matapalo. This project was a collaboration between the tour company Rustic Pathways, Futuro Brillante, Matapalo ASADA, and the Matapalo Development Association. The new courts consist of basketball, volleyball, 7 v. 7 soccer, and sand volleyball. The inauguration event featured speeches from special guests, traditional folkloric dancers, Zumba and a variety of races and competitions for participants of all ages. We are delighted to report that the courts are in full use everyday, and the entire community is enjoying this fantastic new space for healthy recreation.
Futuro Brillante Celebrates 3 Years of Making a Difference
On August 22, Futuro Brillante celebrated its third anniversary. We marked the occasion with a lively street party with local residents, including a 'birthday cake', balloons and even some dancing. We feel privileged and grateful to have the opportunity to continue to serve this wonderful community for three years. Futuro Brillante has grown tremendously since 2016. We began with just one staff member and one small office that also served as a copy center. We now have two offices, the Technology and Training Center, and the community garden. Nine staff members make up our current team, and we have more than 100 volunteers.

We can see the impact that we have had in the community through the many infrastructure projects we have completed including the playground, school multi-purpose auditorium, locker rooms, police station, and most recently the new community sports courts. Our classes and programs have supported local residents to improve their education and become more prepared to enter the workforce. Most importantly, we see a community that is more active, organized, and unified, working together through diverse initiatives to make Matapalo a better place everyday. While we have made tremendous progress during the past three years, we still face many challenges in this region. We hope to continue to 'enrich lives for a brilliant future' for many years to come!
Construction Begins on New Pre-School & Kindergarten Classroom
On September 16, we broke ground on a new project at the Matapalo Elementary School - a new preschool & kindergarten classroom! Due to the rapidly growing population of families with young children in Matapalo and its surrounding neighborhoods, the school has been forced to turn away students in previous years because of lack of classroom space. 50% of the funding for this project is coming from the generosity of the Rotary Chapter of Lakewood, CA , who are donating $15,000 to the project. One of their primary objectives is to support early childhood education. A group of volunteers from Lakewood will be coming to Matapalo the first week of December to help put the finishing touches on the classroom and to celebrate the grand opening. The project is also being supported by generous donations of $5,000 each from Roberto Walz, Steve Rosetta, and the Del Corazon Foundation. Futuro Brillante is spearheading the project in coordination with the school principal. Many thanks to all those involved in this project who are helping to increase access to early childhood education in our community!
Matapalo Officially Launches Community Security Program
On Friday, August 23, the Matapalo Community Security group celebrated the culmination of their five week training with the unveiling of the new Community Watch sign in the plaza. Special guests at the ceremony included the Chief of Police of Santa Cruz Jorge Castillo and Officer Danelia Cordero Ramírez, who led the course in Matapalo. The graduates also received their certificate from the Ministry of Security for completing the course. Following the initial training period, the group will begin to organize regular activities in coordination with the Police to promote security and healthy recreation in Matapalo.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors and allies whose vital support makes our programs possible.
