Celebrating Women in Tech

Ursula Burns MS’82, the first African-American woman to lead a Fortune 500 company, joined Columbia Engineering to celebrate the launch of New York City Women in Tech. The initiative is devoted to leveraging the talent of women engineers as the city consolidates its place as a global tech hub. Six Columbia Engineering Professors Win
NSF CAREER Awards

Their work, spanning a wide range of disciplines, carries extraordinary transformative potential. Since 2015, 23 Columbia Engineering faculty members have been honored with the NSF CAREER award.
From identifying opportunities to de-escalate gang violence to searching for better ways to sort job applicants and assess creditworthiness, three of the School’s esteemed computer scientists and engineers explore how artificial intelligence can help foster social justice.

RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS

A team led by Dion Khodagholy, assistant professor of electrical engineering, has developed the first biocompatible ion-driven transistor that is fast enough to enable real-time signal sensing and stimulation of brain signals.
A new study from Columbia biomedical engineers led by Paul Sajda, professor of biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, and radiology, demonstrates that a brain-computer interface can improve your performance.

STUDENT HIGHLIGHTS

Columbia Engineering's inaugural biohackathon brought together engineers, biologists, architects, and entrepreneurs in search of the next big thing in biodesign.
For the latest installment of Columbia Engineering’s Extreme Engineering series, astronaut Douglas Wheelock came to campus to discuss his stints as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station.

ALUMNI UPDATE

Columbia Engineering mourns the passing of biomedical engineer Alan Kaganov, a pioneer in biomedical engineering who held 15 US patents and helped develop treatments for conditions including heart arrhythmia, spinal and circulatory disease, and drug-delivery systems.
