From the President
Members and Friends, on behalf of the Board of Management of South Maroubra SLSC, we trust that the first part of the season has been an enjoyable one for you!
Whilst Nippers has concluded for 2016 and back January 2017, our Competition and Lifesaving sections are in full swing with South Maroubra remaining operational including weekend surf patrols during what is traditionally one of the busiest and dangerous times of the year on our beach.
I can advise that over the school holidays Randwick City Council, during good weather, will have a lifeguard stationed at the South Maroubra end of the beach and flags will be up from 10am to 4pm so we encourage you to come and enjoy South Maroubra.
To those members who have the responsibility of surf patrols over the festive season, can I take this opportunity to thank you and remind all members the importance of your attendance for rostered patrol duties as many children and adults for that matter will receive new presents, particularly flotation devices they have little experience on. If you happen to be rostered for a surf patrol but cannot attend that patrol for some reason please make every effort to secure a substitute patrol member. You can do this by using the member portal, messaging on social media, contacting your friends within the club, or finally contacting your Patrol Captain or Lifesaving Registrar who will try and assist.
I also remind all of our wonderful lifesavers, particularly our newer members that if you have some spare time on any weekend or public holiday you are welcome to attend any on duty patrol, this is called a voluntary patrol and will help boost our patrol team numbers plus put you in the running for an award if you accumulate enough hours. You just need to see the Patrol Captain on duty and they will log you and allocate duties.
On another note, 2017 has much in store with Australia Day celebrations once again taking place, our Sportsmans Day date and guest speakers are still being settled for either late January or February. If anyone has a notable former or current sports person as a friend I would certainly like to speak to you. The Nipper Trivia and Gold Members Day are again on later in the season plus our first Ocean Swim in 25+ years will be returning to South Maroubra, so still much excitement and work ahead of us.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members and friends a very Merry Christmas and enjoyable festive and holiday season. If you are travelling on our roads, please be safe, drive carefully and take regular breaks to ensure you arrive to and from your destination safely.
Thank you for your contribution this year and see you in 2017 if not before.
Paul ‘Stretch’ Fownes - President
