From the President

Members and Friends, on behalf of the Board of Management of South Maroubra SLSC, we trust that the first part of the season has been an enjoyable one for you!

Whilst Nippers has concluded for 2016 and back January 2017, our Competition and Lifesaving sections are in full swing with South Maroubra remaining operational including weekend surf patrols during what is traditionally one of the busiest and dangerous times of the year on our beach.
I can advise that over the school holidays Randwick City Council, during good weather, will have a lifeguard stationed at the South Maroubra end of the beach and flags will be up from 10am to 4pm so we encourage you to come and enjoy South Maroubra.
To those members who have the responsibility of surf patrols over the festive season, can I take this opportunity to thank you and remind all members the importance of your attendance for rostered patrol duties as many children and adults for that matter will receive new presents, particularly flotation devices they have little experience on. If you happen to be rostered for a surf patrol but cannot attend that patrol for some reason please make every effort to secure a substitute patrol member. You can do this by using the member portal, messaging on social media, contacting your friends within the club, or finally contacting your Patrol Captain or Lifesaving Registrar who will try and assist.
I also remind all of our wonderful lifesavers, particularly our newer members that if you have some spare time on any weekend or public holiday you are welcome to attend any on duty patrol, this is called a voluntary patrol and will help boost our patrol team numbers plus put you in the running for an award if you accumulate enough hours. You just need to see the Patrol Captain on duty and they will log you and allocate duties.
On another note, 2017 has much in store with Australia Day celebrations once again taking place, our Sportsmans Day date and guest speakers are still being settled for either late January or February. If anyone has a notable former or current sports person as a friend I would certainly like to speak to you. The Nipper Trivia and Gold Members Day are again on later in the season plus our first Ocean Swim in 25+ years will be returning to South Maroubra, so still much excitement and work ahead of us.
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members and friends a very Merry Christmas and enjoyable festive and holiday season. If you are travelling on our roads, please be safe, drive carefully and take regular breaks to ensure you arrive to and from your destination safely.
Thank you for your contribution this year and see you in 2017 if not before.
Merry Christmas

Financial planning – more than just advice
Financial planners are often the first port of call for people seeking advice on investing a lump sum of money. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. A professional financial planner has the knowledge and skills to help you achieve your goals and objectives by tailoring strategies to address your specific needs.
Greg Woods is a highly qualified financial planner with Fiducian Financial Services, one of Australia’s very few non-aligned planning groups. As well, Greg is a local – living in Matraville with his family, and his daughter can be seen on Patrol most weekends. His experience and qualifications enable him to help you with your financial goals.
  • Children’s savings – we can work with you on the best ways to save for your children and how to help your children save. For example, education investment bonds can be a useful way in which to provide for the next generation.
  • Budgeting – reviewing your finances and identifying opportunities to manage debt and save money.
  • Risk management – guiding you on protecting your family and your assets in the event of illness, injury, disability or death.
  • Government benefits and allowances – determining your eligibility for government assistance for various benefits from pensions to co-contribution allowances and ensuring you receive the correct entitlements.
  • Retirement planning – helping you find answers to the important questions such as; ‘how much money do I need to retire?’; ‘what do I need to do before I retire?’ and ‘will I be able to retire comfortably now?’
  • Estate planning – we work closely with estate planning professionals to show you how best to structure your assets to benefit your estate when you’re no longer here.
  • Education – helping you to understand your investments and other key financial matters. This builds your knowledge and confidence.
Greg invites you to Fiducian’s seminar:
When: Wednesday 8th February 2017 6.00pm - 8.30pm

Member Recognition
Over recent months we have had members selected and being involved in various SLS activities within the Branch and State.
  • Our super champion on the sand - young nipper - Malikye Kessie was selected in the Sydney Branch Team for the Interbranch Championships.  Fantastic reward Malikye.  Unfortunately due to a clash of commitments for this fine athlete he had to forego his spot in the Branch team on this occasion
  • Nicholas Pavlakis recently attended the NSW Development Network Program. A program developing leaders and we look forward to hearing back from Nick on this weekend. Well done Nick.
  • Nixy Krite recently had the experience of SLSNSW Beach to Bush program. A program designed to give those hundreds of  children in the country areas of NSW, some of whom have never been to a beach, the opportunity to be exposed to surf safety and the environment we all have right on our doorstep. Well done Nixy, your enthusiasm for SLS would have been greatly appreciated by these communities.
  • Our Education team led by Michael Fernandez have been extremely busy over the last 8 weeks delivering training to our new SRC and Bronzies.  We are fortunate with our team of educators and wish to publicly thank and acknowledge their efforts, time and enthusiasm to bring lifesavers to our patrols.  Our Education Team are often the first point of direct one to one contact for new members for involvement in our Club and under Michaels leadership this transition is a great experience for all.
  • To our new SRC and Bronzies from our first intake of trainees for the season - congratulations to each of you on gaining your award.  You are now qualified to wear the red and yellow and give to the community of your new learned skills.  Welcome and congratulations.
Nipper Education
Congratulations to our Nippers that recently completed their SRC award, great job! Thanks to Nicole & Mike our trainers.

The club endorsed and sent 6 of our U13s nippers to attend the Sydney Branch Development Camp, the feedback received was amazing, the team proudly represented our club and were praised for their performance and skills.

We also delivered the Basic Resuscitation and CPR courses (Awards) to our U11s and U13s, thanks to our education team led by our CTO for delivering the courses.

From the Director of Youth Development
Last Sunday of the year was full of great fun, although the weather wasn't too favourable to us, the man in red paid us a visit and didn't disappoint, lots of happy faces. Great day with music, food and treats for our nippers.  Thanks to all the parents that volunteered their time to make this event a success!
