NEW PPL COMMUNITY TREE PROGRAM
In the SWDR, forests are as important as the river we all share. Starting this fall, PPL Electric Utilities will be giving away trees, and is currently looking for ideas and potential tree-planting partners.

GET READY TO WELCOME THE MONARCHS
Monarch butterflies have long been among the SWDR's most reliable seasonal residents, migrating through from their summer breeding grounds to wintering areas in Mexico. But Monarch populations have dropped more than 80% the past 20 years.

SWDR Council members Upper Delaware Council, Upper Delaware Scenic Byway, and others are helping lead the Monarch conservation charge locally. Download a fun and informational brochure that doubles as a poster, and learn about how you can do your part at home, in the SWDR, and through national efforts to help Monarchs — including simple things you can do in your back yard that will support not only Monarchs but also bees, birds, and other pollinators.

Watch the Things to Do page on our SWDR MapGuide for Monarch-related events, like a planned spring redux of last October's Barryville (NY) Butterfly Bike Ride, where bicyclists young and old lobbed seed bombs to plant milkweed and other native plants along Route 97.

Jeffersonville NY's community radio station WJJF rode along and did a piece on its December 3, 2016 "Farm and Country" show.

GREEN LODGING PARTNERSHIP
Fourteen hotels, inns, and B&Bs that are part of the Scenic Wild Delaware River initiative also participate in SWDR partner Delaware Highlands Conservancy's Green Lodging Partnership. The program allows guests to contribute $2 per stay to help protect the region's clean water and open lands. Each year, the program raises $50,000 to $60,000 for the Conservancy's land protection and education programs.
