Greetings friends, comrades, and supporters:

Today, we're writing to you with some somber news. Earlier this month, as we were in the midst of launching our annual grassroots fundraising campaign, we received the devastating news that our cultural workspace in Roxbury caught on fire and has suffered significant damages. Thankfully all of our people are safe. 

As we have done many times before, we are shifting our work to meet the immediate needs of our community, which in this case means securing long term housing for the residents of the house and ensuring that our people do not suffer the financial burden of this disaster while they are displaced. We are also working to support our staff in replacing personal items such as clothing, equipment, furniture, etc. 

For AgitArte's end of year campaign this year, we decided to focus our request of support for our two physical spaces: Casa Taller Cangrejera (Santurce, Puerto Rico) and our Cultural Work Space in Roxbury, Massachusetts. We have worked so hard to secure these spaces, and in particular, in Roxbury, navigating the exploitative real estate market, dealing with repairs and construction to an old building, and finding the right partners to make this housing and cultural space happen. You can imagine how heartbreaking this is for us. 

Before the fire, we had set a goal of $25,000 for this campaign to support operating costs for Casa Taller Cangrejera and our space in Roxbury. Given these unfortunate circumstances and the additional funds we will need to raise to cover costs related to the fire, we’re asking our community to help us double our initial goal by contributing to both fire relief and to our general operations in Boston and Puerto Rico.

Hoy, les escribimos para comunicarles noticias dolorosas. A principios de mes, mientras nos encontrábamos a mitad del lanzamiento de nuestra campaña comunitaria de recaudación de fondos, recibimos un golpe devastador: nuestro espacio de trabajo cultural en Roxbury se incendió y sufrió daños graves. Afortunadamente, toda nuestra gente está a salvo.

Como otras veces, ahora enfocamos nuestro trabajo en suplir las necesidades inmediatas de nuestra comunidad, lo que en este caso significa conseguir vivienda a largo plazo para les residentes de la casa y asegurarnos de que nuestra gente desplazada no arrastre la carga financiera de este desastre. Además, estamos trabajando para apoyar a nuestro personal en el reemplazo de artículos personales, como ropa, equipo y muebles, entre otros.

Para la campaña de AgitArte de fin de año, hemos decidimos centrar nuestra solicitud de apoyo en dos espacios físicos: la Casa Taller Cangrejera en Santurce, Puerto Rico, y el Espacio de Trabajo Cultural en Roxbury, Massachusetts. Luchamos con gran esfuerzo para obtener estos locales —especialmente el de Roxbury—; navegamos el mercado explotador de bienes y raíces, comenzamos a reparar y reconstruir un edificio viejo, y encontramos les aliades indicades para lograr materializar este espacio de vivienda y trabajo cultural. Pueden imaginarse cuán desgarradora nos resulta la situación.

Antes del fuego, habíamos establecido un objetivo de $25,000 para esta campaña con el propósito de cubrir los costos de operaciones de Casa Taller Cangrejera y nuestro espacio en Roxbury. Sin embargo, dada la situación lamentable y dado los fondos adicionales que debemos reunir para solventar los gastos que el incendio provocó, le pedimos a nuestra comunidad que nos asista en alcanzar el doble de nuestro objetivo inicial prestando ayuda para los daños del fuego, así como para los gastos operacionales generales en Boston y Puerto Rico.
