CU in Hong Kong
Fall 2021 Issue One

Thank you for applying to the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to spend your next semester with us!  It’s been a little quieter than usual and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to the campus.  Did you know that CUHK is the largest campus in Hong Kong and boast some of the most scenic spots in the city? Get a preview of the campus in a virtual campus tour we hosted in April (link).  CUHK is one of the finest universities in the world.  It is ranked 39th in the world and 7th in Asia, 3rd most international in the world, and most innovative in Hong Kong.

Studying in Hong Kong during the pandemic

In Term 2 of the 2020-21 academic year, CUHK hosted a small group of students from Denmark and the US under our GLOBE programme.  Thirty-four students braved the pandemic to study in and experience one of the most vibrant cities in the world.  The students underwent 21 days of quarantine, took classes online, made local friends, joined sports teams, explored every corner of Hong Kong, and had the best time of their lives in the past four months.  Read about their experience here and start planning yours!

Keep abreast with quarantine requirements and vaccination programme

The Hong Kong SAR Government has hotel quarantine requirement for all arrivals. Depending on where you are coming from and whether you’ve been vaccinated, the duration will be different.  Quarantine must take place in a designated hotel. You can consider a range of hotels suited to your individual needs and budget.  Most, if not all the hotels will allow delivery of food and other goods, so filling up with delicious meals won’t be a problem!  Check out some of the food apps.  Please do visit this site regularly to keep up with changes COVID-19 Incoming | Office of Academic Links (
There is also an update on the COVID-19 vaccination programme in Hong Kong.  Starting from 6 July 2021, the programme is extended to eligible visitors (i.e. including students with valid Hong Kong student visa).  Students who wish to get vaccinated can register for the programme at any post office (except mobile post offices) after their arrival.  Current details can be found on this webpage.

Smooth sailing during quarantine

We’ll be meeting you regularly via zoom during the quarantine period and will host activities and talks.  We will also provide platforms and opportunities for all of you to connect.   Besides the essentials such as course registration instructions and handy tips for living in Hong Kong, we’ve got fun things lined up such as Cantonese classes and city tours. If you’ve got any other ideas, please do let us know by sending an email to Mr. Colin Chow,

Ready-set-go: Visas

All non-Hong Kong residents admitted to CUHK must apply for a student visa through OAL. If you’ve received instructions on completing your visa application, please complete and return it to OAL as soon as possible.  We will take it from here and liaise with the Hong Kong Immigration Department.  Once it has been approved, we will send it to you via courier.  The normal processing time is about six to eight weeks.

We’ll be touch regularly to provide updates, handy tips, and prepare you for your stay in Hong Kong.  Connect with students from all over the world who will embark on an exchange this coming fall – Facebook Group for IASP Students.
