The Chronicle of Middle Level
Education Research

A Message from the Chair
Dear Middle Level Education Researchers,
I trust everyone had a great Fall semester. At our business meeting in Washington, D.C., the membership decided to make a change to the format of the Chronicle of Middle Level Education Research. There will now be two, more concise issues of the Chronicle annually, one following AMLE and AERA. The Chronicle will share highlights from each conference, minutes from the business meeting, and announcements of interest to the MLER SIG membership. We hope you will enjoy this more streamlined version of the Chronicle, and we encourage you to visit our website and Facebook page for more complete information and updates.

I enjoyed seeing many of you at the Association for Middle Level Education annual conference and symposium in Austin, Texas, October 9-12. The MLER SIG was well -represented at the conference as many of our members made multiple presentations, but a couple of words of appreciation are well-deserved.

First, Penny Howell and members of the AMLE Professional Preparation Advisory Committee planned an outstanding program for the Symposium on Middle Level Teacher Education focused on the theme of advocacy. The sessions and panel discussion helped each of us consider ways to be stronger advocates for middle level education and specialized middle level teacher preparation. The Symposium also had a record attendance! Congratulations, Penny and PPAC!

Immediately following the Symposium, the SIG sponsored the National Convening on Middle Level Research. Thank you to Steve Mertens, Micki Caskey, and Nancy Flowers for organizing this event that brought together numerous organizations (e.g., MLER SIG, NAPOMLE, AMLE, National Forum, NASSP) to discuss future directions for middle level education research. Those in attendance had the privilege to view the newly-released MLER SIG Research Agenda and to discuss how the agenda might guide our work for the next five years. In the near future, you will be receiving additional updates from Steve Mertens regarding next steps for the agenda project. Thank you to the many SIG members who participated in this project over the past couple of years!

At the AMLE conference, the SIG held its regular business meeting to provide updates to the membership. It was our pleasure to welcome several guests representing AMLE, NAPOMLE, the National Forum, and NCES and to receive reports from each officer and working committee. Following the business meeting, the SIG once again sponsored the Research Roundtable: Connecting Theory with Practice session. This year, there were 26 presentations made, a record for this event.

We are looking forward to a strong AERA program this spring. The SIG had a slight increase in the number of submissions this year, a trend we hope will continue. We hope you are making plans to join us at the annual meeting and our business meeting in San Antonio. Now is also the time to renew your AERA and SIG memberships. The SIG membership has grown slightly to 151. Please continue to support your SIG and encourage others to join us.

Have a great conclusion to your fall semester, and I look forward to seeing you in San Antonio.
