Get Ready for the 2017 Tax-Filing Season

The Government of Canada is committed to making the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) more client-focused and helpful. With tax-filing season upon us, we want to make sure that Canadians have enough information to meet their tax obligations and receive the benefits and credits to which they may be entitled. Watch a video on how to "get ready" for the 2017 tax-filing season.

Deadline to file

For most Canadians the deadline to do their 2016 taxes is April 30, 2017.  All Canadians must file a return if they owe tax for 2016, or if several other situations apply.

Receiving benefits and credits

To receive, or continue receiving, benefits and credits, Canadians and their spouses or common-law partners must file their income tax and benefit return on time every year, even if they have no income in the year and keep their personal information up to date with the CRA.
Filing your taxes means you automatically apply for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), a tax-free social program that is simpler, more generous and better targeted. 9 out of 10 families are better off than under the former suite of child benefits.

From July to October 2016, there were approximately 11,200 payments for 20,190 children (under 18 years old) made in the riding of Scarborough-Guildwood. Monthly payments averaged $785 for a total of $8,797,000.

CCB benefits are paid over a 12-month period from July of one year to June of the next year. Your benefit payments will be recalculated every July based on information from your income tax and benefit return from the previous year.
