Chamberlain’s historic display cabinets to be housed at Highbury

Following the refurbishment of the Lapworth Museum at the University of Birmingham, two historic display cabinets have been offered to the CHT for use at Highbury. The cabinets were originally provided for the Museum by Joseph Chamberlain so it’s very fitting that they are going to be transferred to Highbury. 5 smaller display cases, originally donated by Charles Holcroft, are also going to be housed at Highbury. The cases will be incorporated into the restoration plans of the House and will be transferred to Highbury when the work has been completed.

Heritage Lottery Fund site visit
Two senior HLF representatives visited Highbury recently to look around the house and the estate. They gained an insight into the amount of restoration work that is needed and gave us some valuable information about applying for a grant. The preparation of our Stage 1 HLF application is well underway. Project Manager, Jeremy Stone, is now in the process of appointing the various specialists we need to move the project forward. We will update you on who these specialists are in our next newsletter.

Highbury Estate – new protocol

In November the CHT attended the City Council’s Trusts and Charities Committee which is responsible for managing the Highbury Estate. An outcome from the meeting was that the Committee asked the CHT to take on the responsibility for approving all actions undertaken by any group on the Highbury Estate. Henceforth, the CHT will need to be informed of any proposals which will effect the estate. We are in the process of developing a protocol which will be reviewed regularly with the community groups who are active at Highbury. This protocol will cover the period until the CHT is granted a full lease on the estate. The Heads of Terms for the lease have been agreed with the Committee on behalf of the Council.

Appointment of architect

The CHT is very pleased to announce the appointment of an architectural and design practice. Purcell specialise in conservation and preservation, have 13 offices around the UK and will provide us with outline designs for our Stage 1 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The team will be led by partner, Niall Phillips. Survey work to establish the condition of the building will start in mid December.
