Highlights from 2016
Benedicta and Mynor Graduate!
Benedicta and Mynor obtained their MS in Biochemistry on May 2016. Mynor worked on ornithine hydroxylases and Benedicta on isobutalamine monooxygenase.

Heba finished her work at VT!

Heba completed the experiments for her PhD dissertation. She will finish some courses in Egypt before having her dissertation defense. In addition to completing her scientific work (which resulted in 3 papers), she also gave birth to a baby boy. Congratulations Heba!!!

7th SEC

Pablo chaired the 7th Southeast Enzyme Conference in Atlanta, GA.  A nice delegation from VT attended this conference

Visiting Fulbright Scholar
Marika Mehnert, joined the lab as a Fulbright visiting student. She worked on several amino acid decarboxylases . Marika is finishing her PhD in the lab of Prof. Dirk Tischler in Germany.
Welcome New Lab Members:
Dr. Meital Levi (postdoc), Hangu Nam (MS),
Kendra Bufkin (MS), Didier Mena (MS), Hannah Valentino (PhD)
Funding from NSF:
NSF funded our a proposal looking at inositol signaling in plants.  Dr. Gillaspy  is the PI on this proposal.

Funding from Elanco
Our group received a 1-year funding from Elanco . The project focuses on the characterization of phosphatase activity towards LPS.

In the news
From current members:
Pablo Sobrado: Pablo was invited to be a plenary speaker at the ICC5 meeting in Japan. The conference and the locations were fantastic. Take a look at the pictures.

Dr. Julia Martin Del Campo (postdoc). Julia continues working on the identification of inhibitors of SidA and UGM. She published a very nice paper in ACS Chem. Biol. and won the poster competition at the VTCDD poster day. She also continues helping everyone in the lab- she really rocks!
Ms. Kendra Bufkin (MS student). Kendra obtained her BS in Chemistry from Winthrop University. Kendra's research focuses on the characterization of novel flavin monooxygenases and identification of inhibitors of siderophore biosynthesis.
Dr. Meital Eckshtain-Levi (postdoc). Meital started working in the lab early in the spring. She obtained her PhD  at Bar Ilan University. She then did postdoc work at the Weizmann Institute in Israel, her home country. She is currently working on two-component flavin monooxygenases.
Mr. Didier Mena (MS Student). Didier  started his MS degree in the Fall. He is working on various projects all related to flavin monooxygenases. Didier is originally from Costa Rica.

Mr. Hangu Nam (MS student). Han obtained his BS in Biochemistry  from Virginia Tech. He is working with a  flavin-dependent monooxygenases that hydroxylated sulfur atoms in plants.  Han is originally from S. Korea.
Ms. Hannah Valentino (PhD student). Hannah obtained her BS in Chemistry from the SUNY-Oswego. She received the prestigious ICTAS fellowship. She is working in drug discovery against parasites.
From the alumni:
Karina Kijzakina (postdoc '11-13). Karina had an exciting year. She moved to a new job as a QC scientist at Regeneron Pharmaceutical. She also got married to Tony Frangieh. They live in Albany, NY. Congrats Karina!!!
Heba Abdelwahab (PhD student '15-'16). Heba completed her  PhD work in the lab. Her work resulted in 3 pubs!!!. Heba also got married and had her first child- baby boy Ahmed. Heba is back in Egypt and will start working at Damietta University. Congratulations Heba and family!!!

Ana Lisa Valenciano (BS student '10-'11). Ana Lisa finished her PhD at VT and she moved down to Athens, GA for a postdoc at the University of Georgia.

Catherine Klancher (BS student '14-'15). Catherine is doing well in the
PhD program at the University of Indiana. She is working in the Dalia lab.
Dr. Michelle Briggs (Oppenheimer)(2007-2012). Michelle teaches in the Department of Chemistry at Mary Washington University. She is expecting her first baby (a boy!). We are very happy for her and Rob.

Karishma Tolani (BS student '11-'13). Karishma is doing her medical rotation in New York Methodist Hospital. In 2016, she finished her job as president of the Women in Medicine, a national group. She is planning to run a marathon in May 2017 and finish her Medical Degree in June of 2018.
Maria Paulina Echandi (BS student '11).  She graduated from Yale with an  MPH in epidemiology of infectious diseases and also with an MBA. She is now a consultant at a PA Consulting in New York in their Life Sciences sector.
