November 6th, 2020

Hey Huskies, we hope that everyone had a great end of October! There is a lot happening around the Sherman Center this month, be sure to check out our events calendar.

The Sherman Center is excited to announce our two co-op students for the Spring 2021 semester, Kaluwe Muntanga and Michelle Beaudette!

Michelle Beaudette, Kaolin Beauty

"My name is Michelle Beaudette and I am a 3rd year concentrating in entrepreneurship, marketing, and finance, and minoring in psychology. I am the founder of Kaolin Beauty, a non-toxic, vegan, zero-waste makeup company that will feature a line of products with recognizable ingredients that are great for the skin and contain beautiful colors and textures. Starting in mid to late November, we are planning on doing our final round of beta testing. I am really looking forward to fully pursuing my own venture and engage in self growth in a supportive environment."

Kaluwe Muntanga, NEU Gigs

"In 2014, my mom and I immigrated through the Visa Lottery and were granted a permanent residency in the US. We had to start over when we moved, so, I’ve worked many jobs throughout college to support myself, and I’ve struggled to maintain my academic performance while doing so."

"When I transferred to Northeastern, I started to explore ways in which I could help students in the same situation. On October 1st 2019, I launched an Instagram page called neu_gigs, originally a platform for students to advertise services to their peers; by giving students a platform to earn money through side hustles, they no longer have to struggle to manage part-time jobs."

"The page also allows students to make money on their own schedule. It’s been a year since I launched, and the platform has become more of a social market page where students can offer or request anything, promote a side hustle, and spread awareness for events in the community. I’ve also expanded to multiple schools. I’m releasing a mobile app in February 2021, which will give users an immersive experience since they will be able to manually post instead of submitting a request."

"This is a project that has deep ties to my own journey moving to a new country and finding my way. Thus, the opportunity to work solely on the thing I’m most passionate about is a dream come true. I’m also looking forward to collaborating with everyone within the program, since I’ve been primarily working by myself. Moreover, I’ve never been in an environment where I can openly discuss my experiences as an entrepreneur with people who are in the same position so I relish the opportunity to do so."

Today, you join some of our community’s most accomplished members in advancing our global mission and strengthening the human connections that power everything we do. Thank you for your invaluable work, your input, and your leadership. And welcome to Northeastern’s third annual Networked for Life celebrations!"

What is something you are struggling with?

"I've been having a rough time transitioning from 6 months of doing whatever I wanted, and have been wanting to pursue, to going back to the grind of classes, expectations and organizing life again. Although quarantine has been seemingly never-ending, it's helped me to rethink my priorities and what I want my future to look like. Do I want to bake pastries at 5am everyday, or do I want to pursue a career in healthcare marketing, or do I somehow fabricate a career traveling, meeting people, and enjoying life to its fullest? Perhaps I'll figure something out that's a hybrid of all of the above."
