The ESA BIC Switzerland has been allocated to Zurich for not much more than three months and what followed were weeks filled with decisions and actions. We have launched the Business Incubation Center on November 10th 2016 together with partners, entrepreneurs and friends.

There we presented our first three chosen start-ups to guests and the media. Insolight, Ligentec and TwingTec have impressed us with their technology stemming from space research and their applications and use for society and other businesses.

We are over the moon to send to you our first newsletter reporting on those two milestones of the past month.


November 10th was a big day for us, where we introduced the ESA BIC Switzerland to guests and media. Together with partners the European Space Agency and ETH Zurich organized the first of many ESA BIC Switzerland events, bringing together a diverse group of entrepreneurs linked to the space industry. Thereby creating the first opportunity for introduction and networking between different players of the industry.

In the spirit of modern business models, such as start-ups, we chose as a suitable location the Impact Hub in Zurich, where the energetic go-getter atmosphere is matched by the charm of the building and its interior.
The lunch/launch affair was lead by brief talks by the driving forces of the program and short 3 minute pitches by and of the three selected start-ups. In between we had a lovely lunch served by ‘Zum Guten Heinrich’, which was completed with a celebratory cutting of the “space cake”.


The ESA BIC Switzerland has the goal to promote and provide support to start-ups in the field of space technologies and its applications. The following companies presented cutting edge technology that appeal for both space purposes and down to earth (literally) applications for society and businesses. 

founded in 2015 by three EPFL students, takes on the challenge of improving the efficacy, configuration and cost of solar panels. Their developed solar cells are more than twice as efficient for satellites.

founded in 2015 (?) by EPFL students, designs light generating technologies using silicon nitride, creating products that amongst other things increase the data capacity of fiber optic cables by a factor of 200.

founded in 2013 by EMPA and FHNW researchers, develops the next generation of wind energy technology. By using a Twing, which can be described as a “kite system”, they are able to increase efficiency and flexibility of energy harvesting above ground.
The deadline for the next selection round is set for February 28th 2017.

We will gladly further update you in the changes and developments of the ESA BIC Switzerland in the New Year.
