“Smart” Traffic Lights Can Adjust
to Traffic Conditions

Technology is changing quickly in all fields – including traffic lights. Traffic signals are “smarter” and more dynamic than ever, and can adjust signal timings to changing traffic conditions. This technology is called Intelligent Transportation Systems or Advanced Traffic Management SyTraffic Signalsstems.

The New Dixie Highway project will include upgrading intersections with this technology. The ability to monitor and respond to traffic conditions will improve traffic flow, relieve congestion and reduce crashes.

The new system will be connected to Louisville’s Traffic Operations Center using fiber-optic cables that will support communications technology for intersecting streets, traffic cameras, dynamic message signs and other future ITS systems and equipment.
