November 2016 Newsletter

Co-President's Report
With a very rainy October behind us (203 mm of precipitation – the October average is 126.8!), we can now look forward to November and December precipitation in the form of lovely glistening snow. According to the Canadian Farmer’s Almanac however, B.C.’s winter is predicted to be mild and stormy with the rest of Canada experiencing unusually cold temperatures. Despite this, our first trip of the year -- Silver Star/ Sovereign Lakes, is predictably reliable, with great snow conditions and endless snowy trails. Don’t miss this excellent 3-night trip.
Club night was highly successful, with approximately 120 Skiers enjoying Anna’s fabulous appetizers and chatting with friends. (Thank you to Anna, all of the Executive, and Trip Leaders for putting together an outstanding evening.) Skiers signed up for many trips with “first night” trip sign-ups higher than normal. Special guests Anders and Jodi (Sigge’s) joined us, giving us a heads-up on what to look forward to at Sigge’s over the winter season.
Be sure to join us for this season’s club nights. This year, we’ll be hosting a Ski Gear Sale and Swap, and offering several slide shows of Skiers trips cycling and hiking in exotic locations. Check out the website for more information. We are also planning a club night at the new Hollyburn Lodge. (Staff and volunteers are presently working hard to get the lodge up and running by December 15. For more information check out:
We look forward to seeing you (soon) on the slopes!

Message from our Trip Coordinators:

Hello and welcome to all of our new members and also to our returning members.
We've had a wonderful response to our trip schedule this year. Thank you skiers for your enthusiasm.

Two trips are already full and have a waitlist, Sun Peaks (January 13-15) and Methow Valley (February 21-26). If you want to go on these trips, please contact the trip leaders and ask to have your name be added to the waitlist. You will need to send a cheque to secure your place on the waitlist. As we all know things can change and someone may cancel, so don’t despair you might still have a chance.

The Vernon and Kelowna trips are nearing capacity so if you want to go on any of these trips please contact the trip leader as soon as possible.
All of the other trips have space available and if you want to go on these trips, contact the trip leaders or sign up for the trip online through Zone 4.
We are looking forward to a great season and to seeing all of you on the trails.
Lesley and Berni

Membership Update

Thus far our membership numbers are surpassing last year's excellent numbers. As of November 3rd we have 181 members, 12 more than the same date last year. More of these registrations have been done on Zone-4 which means less paper forms and the extra work they entail...thanks!
As you may know, Cross Country BC has launched a friendly competition among the clubs in BC. To win, a club has to have the highest percentage of members registered, as of midnight Dec 1, 2016, as compared to its previous winter’s total membership.
To make things fair as well as have more winners, clubs have been divided into 6 groups and a winner will be selected from each group, for a total of 6 winners. Our club is in group C (201-500 members) where we are up against clubs like Hollyburn and Strathcona.
CCBC has been able to collect an impressive amount of prizes; great ski gear from Fischer, Swix, Salomon and Rossignol and fabulous packages from
Tyax and SilverStar Nordic.
We are currently at 76% of the 2015/2016 membership and sitting in second place, right behind Hollyburn—let's catch them! With 25 days still to go, we can do it. If you have not yet renewed your membership—now is the time, right HERE.

Coaching Day – Cypress / Hollyburn
Saturday, December 17th, 2016

Cypress xc-ski instructors provide instruction within a positive, supportive, and fun-filled environment. Coaching Day offers Classic or Skate lessons for beginners, intermediate, and experienced skiers. Lesson progression begins with the basic skills to ski comfortably without falling or tiring-out and moves toward refinements intended to develop efficiency and speed.

Practicing and discussing techniques with a Cypress Instructor will give novice skiers a rewarding launch. For the more experienced skier, lessons will wake-up muscle memory, re establish balance and coordination. putting you back at the controls while a qualified Instructor provides feed-back.

Lessons are two hours in length, beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. Arrive by 8:30 a.m. to get a place in the parking lot, obtain rentals (if needed) join the group for free coffee, and organize into instructional groups.
With special coaching day discounts for Vancouver Skier members, lessons are $16.00 per person and trail fees are $19.00 /adults and $12.00 /Seniors (65+). If you require ski gear, rentals are available for $20.00.

Lessons end with a "Skier" lunch at the new Hollyburn Lodge. For $10.00 (plus tax) you can enjoy a hot soup or chili, home-made bread, hot drink and a cookie.
Invite your adult family and friends to start the season! Learn, lunch, and play!

For more information and registration go to our website ‘Coaching Day’ or contact the organizer, Brian O’Dwyer.
This event is dependent upon snow conditions. Follow the website for up-to-date information!
Did you know?
The Vancouver Skiers also have a meetup group:
Vancouver Cross Country Skiers Meetup
The meetup was created to reach out to a different, younger group of xc-skiers and to point them to our club. In addition, the meetup site is a place where you can organize ski trips outside the club trip schedule. Why not become a member of the meetup group and post your own day trip and find someone to share the cost of the drive? Check it out here!
