Summer Institute Promotes Equity and Social Emotional Learning
From: Penny Plavala

Educators from across Oregon attended the Summer Institute at Mt. Hood Community College: Building Equity, Excellence, and Engagement with Culturally Responsive Text, August 14.

Author Pam Allyn shared practical strategies to help students become strong, confident, and curious readers, writers and thinkers.

Pam’s work is grounded in the 7 Strengths for Reading Success, a social-emotional framework she created to help teachers design a vibrant and child-centered classroom community in which transformational reading is commonplace. The seven strengths for reading success are: belonging, curiosity, friendship, kindness, confidence, courage, and hope.

Pam stated, “By naming their own strengths—from curiosity to courage to kindness—children begin to see themselves as readers who are facing struggle with joy and purpose. This shift in perspective changes the learning landscape for children. Suddenly, when confronted with a challenging text, they know they have the skills to overcome difficulties and tackle the content rather than feel defeated. Super Readers are bold and brave and not afraid to push forward into new territory to discover new meaning.”

Educators learned if they focus on a strength-based approach, they say to every child: You can succeed, practice matters, and what you bring to the reading of a book—your ideas and processes—are all strengths.

The Summer Institute was co-hosted by the Multnomah Education Service District, Scholastic Education and the Portland Reading Council.
