Project Update: What's Next for the Finch West LRT?

The Finch West LRT continues to progress through procurement and remains on schedule for construction to start in the fall of 2018. The project will be delivered as a design, build, finance, and maintain (DBFM) contract.

On December 13, 2017, Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx closed the Request for Proposal (RFP) with three interested parties (bids). The three RFP bids are currently being evaluated and a Preferred Proponent announcement is expected in April.

Specifics regarding the timeline will be confirmed and shared as we progress through procurement and the winning contract is announced. Keep an eye out for updates in future newsletters, and follow us on Twitter for regular project updates.

Construction: Enbridge Relocating Natural Gas Pipelines

Starting the first week of April 2018, Enbridge Gas Distribution will be relocating natural gas pipelines on the north and south sides of Finch Ave. West between Duncanwoods Dr. and the railway bridge east of Weston Rd. to accommodate the construction of the new Finch West LRT. It is expected that the work will be completed by late August.

Traffic will be affected in both directions on Finch Ave. West for the duration of the work. Some work may be rescheduled due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances. Additional utility relocation work will also commence at the same time in the vicinity of Signet Road.
Closure: Humber River Recreational Trail Access

Starting March 22, 2018, the Humber River Recreational Trail access to/from Finch Ave. West between Islington Ave, and Milady Rd. will be temporarily closed. This closure is due to the relocation of the natural gas pipeline in advance of work on the Finch West Light Rail Transit project. The Finch Ave. West access point will re-open in June 2018.

Finch West LRT Stop Naming Engagement

Metrolinx invited the public via MX Engage from January 29th to February 12th, 2018 to share their thoughts on four proposed name changes for the Finch West LRT stops:
  • Weston > Emery Village
  • Jane > Jane and Finch
  • Kipling > Mount Olive
  • Islington > Thistletown
The online engagement was promoted on the FWLRT website and Twittter. In total, 189 comments and 375 poll responses were provided. Thank you to everyone that participated and provided their feedback. The four proposed stop names will be brought to the Metrolinx Board this June 2018 for a final decision.

#FinchWestConnects the Faces of Finch

The Finch West community is a diverse and unique mosaic of different cultures. In an effort to get to know you, we launched our #FinchWestConnects campaign in January 2018. Throughout the last few months, we’ve connected with people of all different ages and cultures that live, work and go to school along the Finch West corridor. We`d like to share some of their unique stories…

Home - Work - Downtown Connections for Jennifer

Jennifer Singh has lived and worked in the Albion neighbourhood for over 27 years. Once the Finch West LRT is built, it will help connect Jennifer seamlessly to the Albion Library where she works to downtown Toronto. You can watch her short video here

Seneca College Connections for Shante, Sheba, Stef, Lashanna & Victoria

Seneca College Students (L-R) Shante, Sheba, Stef, Lashanna & Victoria use public transportation to commute to their classes daily. They're excited the Finch West LRT will help them connect to their school.

Community Connections for Prophet Emmanuel Kwaku

Prophet Emmanuel Kwaku Osei-Minta is a pastor of a church in the Finch West area for several years. He stopped by our Jane Finch Mall pop-up event and was pleased to find out the project will get underway this year and how it can help revitalize and connect the community.

"Transit in Your Community" School Presentations

To create learning opportunities for outreach and engagement with children, their parents and the community about the role and the importance of transit and transportation, Metrolinx signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) to provide Transit in Your Community presentations to schools across the Finch West line.

The Metrolinx Finch West LRT team is currently in the process of setting up presentations to grade 5 and 10 classes. Grade 5 students will have a chance to demonstrate their creativity to “Design Your Dream Neighbourhood” and grade 10 students will have an opportunity to listen to a guest speaker and get some insight into careers in engineering, the apprentices and trades.

If your school is interested in having us come and present, please email
