Port Everglades Pilots' Quick Response and Handling Saves Seven Lives

PORT EVERGLADES - April 9, 2017 - Pilot boat driver, Captain Grant Flavell, recently prevented a possible catastrophic collision between an outbound cruise ship and a broken down boat with six passengers aboard in Port Everglades' main ship channel.

Port Everglades Pilot Captain Todd Cooper was piloting the cruise ship, M/S Eurodam, when he noticed a boat became disabled right in front of the ship. He immediately contacted Captain Flavell by radio to notify him, who responded immediately to tow vessel to safety.

After Captain Flavell arrived and threw the disabled boat a towline, one of the boat passengers jumped into the water in front of the cruise ship to assist with the tow line. Fortunately, the swimmer was recovered and Captain Flavell was able to tow the vessel to safety to prevent collision with the cruise ship and possibly preventing loss of life.
