Dear iLEAD Families and Staff,

For all of us, it’s difficult to comprehend how quickly the COVID-19 situation is evolving and the changes in daily life we’re experiencing. Shortly after we emailed you Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order directing Californians to stay at home. Yesterday, Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo announced her recommendation to extend closure of all public schools until May 5, 2020. iLEAD continues to work closely with national, state and local authorities, and although we’re eager to be reunited with our staff and students at our sites during this school year, we have not yet committed to a return date.

At this unprecedented time, our learners are grappling with these rapid changes. We’re grateful they have such wonderful families — and our caring facilitators and staff — to help them process all of this. Please see below for links to additional resources to guide you as you provide emotional support to your learner.

Once again, we have some important information to share. As a reminder, you are still permitted to participate in essential activities, such as picking up food from our sites, under the current “stay-at-home” orders.

  • We will continue offering free breakfast and lunch for pickup, and the “stay at home” orders will not impact our ability to serve these meals. Our site-based schools will keep providing both breakfast and lunch free to all children 18 years old and younger (whether or not they are enrolled at our sites) on the same schedule we used prior to the order. (See below for your school’s link.)

  • Our Student Support services are moving forward via virtual learning. We are developing distance learning opportunities for our Student Support learners so they can participate by phone and via the internet. We will be flexible with providing assistive technology; as always, we continue to support equity and access for all learners.

  • As a reminder, Governor Newsom has suspended standardized testing this school year. “This time is stressful enough for students, families and educators without the additional burden of annual testing,” Governor Newsom said. “This is an unprecedented time, and our main focus is on supporting the mental and socioemotional health of students, while continuing to provide educational opportunities such as distance learning.” State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond added: “I appreciate the Governor’s leadership here and recognizing that under the current circumstances, the last thing our students need is to be confronted with a test.” Our leadership team is grateful for this important decision, and we look forward to continuing to focus on providing innovative educational options for our learners via the virtual platform.

  • And, one more reminder: AT&T and Spectrum are offering free or low-cost home internet service, should your family need it to complete the online/virtual coursework.

Please feel free to reach out to us with any questions you may have. Stay home, stay safe and stay connected!

Thank you,
