Held during October of 2019, UNT’s 2019 RMI Week was once again a huge success! The week was packed with several events that brought the insurance industry to campus. Among the many special events, the annual RMI career fair broke records with regard to corporate and student attendance. The Travelers also sponsored a sit-down lunch for well over 200 students and presented its nationally recognized “Every Second Matters” symposium. A Risk Manager in Residence grant from the Spencer Foundation allowed us to bring a special guest for the week’s activities, Mr. Dan Kugler, VP Enterprise Risk Management for the REV Group.
HUB International was also on campus for a lunch-n-learn event and many other interactions occurred that brought the local DFW insurance industry together with our UNT students. The busy RMI Week wrapped up with a UNT RMI/GIS Alumni and UNT Eagle Business Network happy hour at Legacy Hall in Plano, TX. It was great to see old friends and meet new ones, as well!

Interest in RMI at UNT continues to grow by leaps and bounds. With the newly created RMI Certificate and the revamped RMI curriculum finally becoming effective in 2019, we have experienced over 20% growth in RMI course enrollment during the 2019-2020 academic year. Additional curriculum development avenues are being pursued at UNT and we look forward to seeing more students taking advantage of the refined program and the opportunities the insurance industry has to offer.

We added a new member to our team – Ms. Sally Carne is the new Risk Management and Insurance Program Project Coordinator for our program. Sally is a UNT RMI program alum (1998) and comes to us after many years on the agency side of the business. Her primary responsibilities are to manage the RMI/GIS student activities and industry interactions. Sally is excited to work alongside the UNT faculty and industry professionals to help prepare students for rewarding careers in the risk management and insurance industry.

Connecting Students with Industry
|
|
A major focus of our program remains to be the creation of a “marketplace” where our students and the insurance industry are able to meet. To that end, we work very hard to facilitate such interaction, both on and off campus. These interactions assume various forms, including industry presentations in classes, at lunch-n-learn events, at special GIS meetings, company visits, etc. A non-exhaustive list of some of those corporate friends include: AIG, Allstate, AmWINS, AON, Ascend Insurance Brokerage, Beazley, Chubb, Compass Risk Services LLC, Frost Insurance, Higginbotham & Associates, HUB International, Liberty Mutual, Optimum Life Re, Quest Pro, Texas Mutual, Travelers, Starr Insurance Companies.
Many, many other program friends and alumni (too many to list here) have also supported us in similar capacities. Thank you to all of you who keep us in mind and who endeavor to “pay it forward” by supporting the next generation of RMI professionals. We really appreciate it! Please reach out to Sally (Sally.Carne@unt.edu) if you would like to discuss a possible interaction with our students.
Prior to the unique environment in which we found ourselves this past spring and summer, our RMI students were exceedingly busy, attending a number of regional and national events/conferences including, among others:
» Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) Symposium | Austin, TX
» DFW CPCU Society All-Industry Day | Dallas, TX
» DFW RIMS 2019 Fall Conference | Grapevine, TX
» CPCU Society Conference | New Orleans, LA
» Houston Marine & Energy Insurance Conference | Houston, TX
» National Gamma Iota Sigma Conference | Dallas, TX
» Jim Millerman Insurance Convention
sponsored by IIAD | Arlington, TX
» Industry Association Monthly Luncheons
and Networking Events
