Last night, President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. Comey had been vigorously investigating ties between the current administration and the government of Russia. This is an attack on the norms that support rule of law in this country — and reminds many observers of Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre, when Nixon abolished the office of the Watergate prosecutor in an effort to cover up his illegal activities.

President Trump’s stated reason for firing Comey was the FBI Director’s treatment of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election — but Trump earlier praised that move. And just days ago, kick-ass former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates testified that she told the administration then-National Security Advisor Mike Flynn was lying about his ties to Russia, and was vulnerable to Russian blackmail.

Below please find a script for calling your US Senators (as they will have the final say-so over the new FBI Director). As always, you can find your Senators' information here.

Hi, my name is {Name} and I'm calling from {Zip Code}. I'm calling to ask that Senator {NAME} demand an independent special investigation into ties between President Trump, his family, and the Government of Russia. I would also like the Senator to refuse to confirm a new FBI Director until such an investigation is funded and underway.

This is the time to put country before party, and our national security ahead of ego. I'll be watching the Senator's actions on this issue, and voting accordingly.
Second Wind
Not sure what all of the implications of Comey's firing are? Read up on it at The New York Times.
Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, which is also investigating the Trump-Russia question, called it “deeply troubling” that Mr. Trump had fired Mr. Comey during an active counterintelligence investigation. He said the move had made it “clear to me that a special counsel also must be appointed.”

The developments have heightened interest in several related legal issues.
