Shelter in Place

Today is King’s Day, a nationwide festivity that normally requires orange face paint, flea markets, and lots of beer. The king and queen choose a spot in the Netherlands to wave serenely to the crowd. From noon until midnight, multiple live concerts blasted from amps would carpet-bomb Amsterdam.

This King’s Day is different. Outside in our street, a concert begins. Our neighbors, Merijn and Henk are violinists with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. The lockdown bars them from their place of work but it doesn’t stop them from performing.

It’s good to think laterally. For amusement, I have plenty of books and the ubiquitous screen. But sometimes it's fine to take in the world other than through my eyes. Say, a classical music concert wafting through my study window. One of the many kinds of Listening Pleasures.
