Shanghai Noir

Summer is here. When the sun is out, all I want to do is lie like a lizard. When it rains (which is the more common weather forecast here in Amsterdam), I'd just as soon stay in bed. My energy is ebbing away. Or maybe there's nothing wrong with my energy level but my attention span. I'm itching tor travel, for far horizons, to look through one end of a camera and see what's on the other side of the world.

In a little over two months, we leave on our round-the-world adventure. It feels monumental and more than a little scary. Slowly but surely, I am cutting myself adrift from my daily structure.

Yesterday, we had our last BBQ for one of my writing groups. It was see you in September for them and bon voyage for me.

Today, I delivered a review to Bookish Asia on a short story collection called Hong Kong Noir. It's the last paid review I'll write before we leave on our trip. By the time you get this newsletter, it will probably be live so you can check it out here.

Next week will be my last class for the spring creative writing workshop. I have just one more workshop to go this summer and then my teaching duties will be over.

In the meantime, our itinerary grows as does my list of things to do before I can leave.

Maybe you're wondering why I even bother planning a round-the-world trip. Why not just buy a one-way ticket to wherever and be done with? It's certainly a way to go but it's not mine. I've got goals for this trip. You can read what those are in this week's blog post: Novel Navigation.

As for public appearances, the Day of Writing and Publishing organized by Expanded Field Journal will probably be one of my last. It was a surprisingly large crowd with a lot of questions though some felt a little out of left field. Like: how do I deal with muscle cramps if I write so often by hand. Wha?

If you're dying to see me perform again, check out the Master Class with Caoilinn Hughes on July 28. I get to facilitate that session though the spotlight will be on her. Come by. It'll be fun!
