Chiles Mexicanos: antes y despues

Shanghai Noir

The Dancing Girl and the Turtle: publication date 01.04.2017

I've still got food on my mind since last week's post, so here's a great chart from Amo Mi Cultura Mexicana showing the before and after of Mexican chili peppers. This visual aid should come in quite handy when I try to source ingredients of my sunny childhood from the stores in my frigid present.

The memory of these spices must be overheating my brains because it royally pissed me off to read this article in The Guardian. We all know that Facebook and other tech giants have come under heat lately for enabling Russian interference in the US elections. Apparently the pendulum is now swinging the other way. From those halcyon days when don't be evil was all we needed to make the world a better place, techies must now do the right thing. For Facebook, that means actively blocking posts that do not adhere to Community Standards. Here's one example:

“Kill yourself n*******” reviewed & found not to violate standards. “All men are allegedly ugly?” removed and the woman banned within hours pic.twitter.com/RfpJTt5Mg7

This article reports that only women are being targeted, but it should be noted that they're all comedians, too. Rather than rampant sexism, maybe Facebook just has no sense of humor. Algorithm in the works?

Maybe not. There are still some things only humans can do, like tell a joke or read a face. A computer could probably devise a far better system for organizing my library but what would be the fun in that? That's the topic of this week's blog post: House of Books.

P.s. As a pre-Christmas bonus, here's my book review of Exit West by Mohsin Hamid. It's a jewel of a book that I highly recommend.
