Award Nominations Due July 1

Please consider nominating deserving individuals for the UM National Alumni Association’s awards at montevallo.edu/alumni-awards.

The following award nomination deadlines are on July 1:

  • Mary Lou Elder Williams Alumni Loyalty Award
  • Outstanding Commitment to Teaching Award
  • Outstanding Staff Service Award

Summer Soirée and Silent Auction Set for July 22

The Junior Board’s annual soirée and silent auction returns on July 22 at 6 p.m. at Oak Mountain Brewery in Pelham.

The popular event is open to all alumni and serves as a fundraiser for the Junior Board’s scholarship fund. Alumni merchandise along with area gift certificates, artwork and other items will be auctioned off throughout the evening.

Falcons to Add College Wrestling

UM Athletics recently announced the addition of men’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sport. The inaugural season for the program will begin in the winter of 2023. The addition of men’s wrestling will increase the number of intercollegiate sports at UM to 22. The announcement marks the addition of the 11th new intercollegiate sport added at Montevallo within the past decade.

Montevallo is the first NCAA Division II institution and second overall in the state of Alabama to add men’s wrestling as an intercollegiate sport. 

New Scholarship Seeks to Improve Teacher Shortage 

Throughout Alabama, rural school systems are experiencing teacher shortages that the University is stepping up to try and fill.

UM’s College of Education and Human Development has committed to increasing the number of highly qualified teachers to serve in targeted rural public schools by offering the new Rural Recruitment Scholarship. This scholarship will support and prepare students to teach in rural schools. Read more

Fishing Team

Fishing Team Named School of the Year for Second Consecutive Year

The fishing team was once again crowned the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia.

Nearly 200 collegiate bass fishing teams from across the nation competed in the Bass Pro Shops 2022 BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship tournament at Pickwick Lake in Florence, Alabama, on May 26-27, but only one was named School of the Year for having amassed the most cumulative points of any team in the nation. Read more

SCOB Adding Four New Concentrations

The swiftly growing Stephens College of Business has added four new concentrations – two in management and two in finance – that will be available to students starting fall 2022.

The new concentrations in finance are sustainable finance and financial sales. The new management concentrations are international management and human resources. Read more

The University is hosting a number of youth summer camps on campus in June including Bass Fishing Camp, Ebenezer’s Explorers Day Camps, Young Musicians’ Camp, and Women’s Basketball Camps. Learn more.

Fallin Encourages Graduates to Strive for Better Than Their Best

As the keynote speaker at Spring Commencement on May 7, Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. M.A. ’89, emeritus professor of historyoffered the 350 graduates three points to guide their lives:

  • Think critically about the great issues of life
  • Broaden horizons
  • Be in a wholesome state of dissatisfaction
    (to always be dissatisfied with better when the best can be achieved)

On May 4, the University held a building dedication ceremony officially renaming the University of Montevallo on Main (UMOM) to Dr. Wilson Fallin Jr. Hall.

Endowed Spanish Chair Established

Thanks to the generous $500,000 gift by a 1960 Alabama College alum and her husband, the University of Montevallo will create the Christiane Angele Jacobson Endowed Spanish Chair in English and World Languages.

Christiane “Chris” Jacobson and her husband, Dr. Eric Jacobson, have pledged to donate the half-million-dollar gift to the Spanish program in the English and World Languages Department in memory of Elizabeth Stockton, a former mentor of Chris who was her Spanish professor at Alabama College – UM’s former name from 1923 to 1969. Read more

Own a Piece of UM History

125 year sculptureThe University of Montevallo recently celebrated its 125th anniversary at Founders’ Day, marking a significant milestone in the University’s history of preparing students for success.

To commemorate this occasion, Montevallo alum Nelson Grice ’94, M.Ed. ’96 is creating a limited number of cast bronze works of art incorporating the University’s seal, bricks, ginkgo leaf, falcon and Palmer gates. Each handmade piece is about 7" tall and 6" wide, and production will be limited to just 125 pieces and five artist proofs. Read more and purchase.
