News

Two of our key topics are closing soon - have your say on our Commonplace platform!

Nature’s Recovery and Green Jobs and Skills are open on the Commonplace platform for you to provide feedback but they will be closing soon. View the recordings and written outputs from the Delivering Impact sessions here https://yorkshirecap.commonplace.is/ and give your feedback.

Watch our video with (Andy’s video hopefully!)

Feedback via Commonplace is an important way for Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission to gather valuable insights from the public and from stakeholders on the different topics we tackle in the Delivering Impact sessions. It’s also useful to go on the platform and see what other people are saying - you can read all the comments and agree with them if you wish.

Are you part of an Environmental Community Group - log your actions on our Commonplace platform

Did you know there is an interactive map on Commonplace where Community Groups can share the work they are doing? We want to know about climate and nature impacts and activities across Yorkshire and Humber. Tell us what groups, projects, initiatives and organisations are doing where you live that are helping to make positive change, and the climate-related issues your area faces.

Please share this link with your local groups: https://yorkshirecap.commonplace.is/en-GB/map/tell-us-what-youre-up-to

The LWNF Panel explores a regenerative land use framework for our region

Last week, members of the Land Water Nature Food panel gathered at Potterick Carr for an in depth exploration of a regenerative land use framework for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The panel agreed the following key points:

  • The size of the Yorkshire and Humber region positions it well for the next step which involves scaling up the regional land use framework that has been piloted in Devon.

  • Ensuring our future land use is regenerative is key in delivering climate resilience, food security and supporting nature's recovery.

As such the Panel explored how the framework could be evolved for our region, what opportunities it could provide and what challenges would need to be overcome in developing and implementing a regenerative regional land use framework. These discussions will continue through the Land, Water, Nature and Food Panel Delivering Impact Sessions.

You are welcome to join the next session on 4 April Cultural adaptation: attitudes, behaviour and communication .

Remembering Commissioner Rob Purdy

It was with great sadness we learned that Rob Purdy passed away in January. Rob’s family have chosen Winston’s Wish for any donations. The charity supports bereaved children and are supporting Rob’s daughters during this time. There is no specific page/site set up so any donations would be gratefully received direct to the charity www.winstonswish.org.

UCU Strike Action

UCU strike action is continuing through March and affects a number of the Secretariat team. The team is also being impacted by illness so please bear with us if responses are slower than usual.

Delivering Impact Sessions

Join our Delivering Impact Sessions

All Commissioners and panel members are warmly invited to our upcoming
Delivering Impact sessions. The series of sessions across our four themes (climate resilience and adaptation; net zero carbon; a just and inclusive transition; protecting nature and biodiversity) will be continuing over the next 18 months, and we invite you to join any that are of interest, especially those in your area of expertise.
In the sessions, we will be joined by speakers who will give us the national, regional and on-the-ground context, and together we will identify next steps and ambitious actions. The outputs will be shared through a digital engagement platform, where people will be encouraged to give their views, and will also feed into our National Policy Forum and be pieced together to create a picture of progress in the region.

The link to register is now available for these sessions:

All sessions scheduled so far are listed in our calendar below.

Climate Action Pledge

Has your organisation taken the opportunity to sign the Climate Action Pledge?

A third of organisations within the Commission have signed the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Action Pledge. Formal backing of the Pledge from Commissioners’ organisations is fundamental to it’s success across the region. If your organisation hasn’t signed yet, let us know how we can help by contacting j.kedwards@leeds.ac.uk.

You can support the Pledge by:

  • Encouraging your organisation to sign

  • Letting us know how can we use your networks to help encourage more signatories

  • Joining the Climate Action Pledge oversight group

Information about the Pledge is on the website here climateactionpledge.org.uk. Jon has also produced the information in a pdf if you want a document to email to colleagues here

FixOurFood: Regenerative Farming in Yorkshire
19 April | 12.00 - 12.40 | Online

This webinar is hosted by The Global Food and Environment Institute (GFEI)

Regenerative agriculture has become increasingly popular with interest from producers, retailers, researchers and politicians, as it could provide opportunities to produce food and simultaneously restore historically degraded land. However, there is currently a lack of evidence-based practice and an understanding of the challenges, impacts and trade-offs of changing agricultural practices. As part of the FixOurFood programme, the University of Leeds has been researching the impact of regenerative farming systems in Yorkshire.
