March Membership Meeting

Please join us on Tuesday, March 9th at 9:30am for our monthly membership meeting.  We will meet via Zoom.  We will send the link out in advance.

We've got a lot to do at the meeting, so please read all of these in advance:

Founders Fund:  We will vote for our choice for The Garden Club of America's Founders Fund award.  The Founders Fund is a prestigious grant made annually to a GCA garden club spearheading a special project that promotes community, gardening and nature. Proposals are whittled down to 3 finalists by the Founders Fund Board, and each garden club is asked to vote for their favorite.

Please read here about the nominees for the 2021 Founders Fund award in advance of next Tuesday's meeting.  This is a great learning experience for all of the GCCC members, as we may propose our Walter Reed Garden Revitalization Project as a nominee. We will vote on the nominees at our March meeting.
New member nominee:  Meet JoJo Spallone!  JoJo is our newest nominee for club membership.  Please read the recommendation letters from Julie Maner and Nancy Ridgway.  We will be voting on JoJo via email after the meeting.

Here are the Minutes from February's meeting.

Walter Reed Garden Revitalization Update

March is an exciting month for the Walter Reed Committee!  Thankfully Covid had subsided enough that we’ve been able to schedule visits to Walter Reed’s Eagle Courtyard Garden.  On March 2nd, members of the Walter Reed Committee and the Executive Board will go to see the garden.  Then on March 17th, we will be able to take a prospective landscape architect to view the site.

In addition, we are in the process of scheduling a March video chat with Dr. Naomi Sachs.

Dr. Sachs is an assistant professor of plant science and landscape architecture at the University of Maryland.  Her primary areas of interest are restorative and therapeutic landscapes, evidence-based design, healthcare design, and salutogenic (health-promoting) design. Dr. Sachs will introduce us to the basic principles of healing gardens and will present an assessment tool she developed for assessing them.  We hope to use this tool in our efforts at Walter Reed!  Date and time for the presentation are TBD.  We will keep you posted!

GCCC's Spring Garden Tour

Oh, the promise of spring, warmth and blooming gardens!

This year's annual Spring Garden Tour is scheduled for Sunday, May 2, 2021.

On Demand:

"Painting with Flowers"
with Floral Designer Christin Geall

Looking for a video to watch in your own time that offers tips on the mechanics and colors of flower arranging?

Designer Christin Geall shares her expertise on how to bring color and plants together to create easy elegant arrangements, and then provides tips on how to photograph them.

The Forsythia are beginning to bloom in my garden which is a sure sign of warming ground temperatures and anticipation of the burst of spring bulbs soon to come. The Garden Club of Chevy Chase Program Committee, in anticipation of spring flowers from your garden and the upcoming Miniature Flower Design workshop, thought you might enjoy this 'On-Demand' video produced by the GCA - Episode 3, "Painting with Flowers."  The video is full of inspiration that will improve your arranging techniques.

If you have trouble accessing the video, or want to find additional videos  click on Read, Watch, Shop and select "Videos" in the Members Section of the GCA website. It's a great recourse (and fun way to pass the time on these rainy March days).
