Pastor’s Note: Rethinking
It has been a challenging nine months, to say the least! I never dreamed that we would have to learn so much or that we would become so dependent on technology to keep us connected! You have likely noticed that the church has been communicating more by email during this time. One of the blessings of this is that it has saved an enormous amount of paper, postage, printing costs, and labor. It has also shortened the time between sending and receiving.
Up to this point, most of our emails have been focused on worship with a few updates or announcements included. We know that it has been some time since a newsletter was sent out and part of the reason for this is that we have been thinking about the purpose of our publications. Specifically, we have been pondering WHO they are for...church members only or the wider community. In recent months it has been exciting to see how many people are joining us on Facebook for worship! We realized early on that these folks don't receive a lot of our information as we don't have contact information for them. This has led us to rethink WHO we are communicating with.
At the same time, we also realize that it has been some time since we thought about HOW we are communicating. Newsletters used to be read primarily as printed copies which made the lengthy articles and multi-column format ideal. Now, however, more and more people are accessing our communications on computers, smartphones, and tablets, which makes this design more difficult to read.
With that in mind, we are experimenting with a "Weekly Spire" that highlights important information in an easier to read format which can also be posted on our Facebook page and website (just in time for the holidays!). I hope you find it helpful.
Blessings, Pastor Laurie
