Monthly e-newsletter for Wett Ones members and friends from the Club President

22 February 2021

Dear <<First Name>>,

It's hard to think that 12 months ago we were in Melbourne for the IGLA Championships.  How things have changed over the last 12 months - and how fortunate we were to participate in this international championships before COVID really took hold at home and around the world...

It's been great to see some new faces around the pool deck - please welcome Victor Le, Julie Blatch, James Stanwell, Martin Pappas, Ray Ziesing, Corrie Diamond, Casey Allen, Lucy Horne and Arun Agranat to the Wett Ones family.

The usual pre-Mardi Gras buzz is a little flatter this year, with the limited march and no Fair Day.  But 'tis the season, nonetheless, and we've organised our own little Mardi Gras event to keep the glitter, rainbows and fun going in 2021.  Read on to find out more!

In this newsletter:

  • Committee update
  • Events
  • Swim Challenge
  • Laps for Life
Check out our new member video!  Thank you to all of the club members who participated in the production.
Wett Ones is once again participating in Laps for Life, raising funds for the Reach Out charity supporting vulnerable and at risk youth.

We all know how important swimming is to our physical and mental health.  This March, take the plunge and the challenge to raise funds to support those who need assistance.

Wett Ones has a team fundraising page - register today, nominate a distance you'll swim throughout the month, log your laps and ask your friends and family to support you as you go.  Last year the club raised close to $6,000 for Laps for Life - let's see if we can smash that in 2021!

Any questions - speak to Brad Hastings or Luca.

Committee update:

We held our monthly committee meeting recently - another packed agenda kept the conversation flowing.

Women's bootcamp

See below for further information about an upcoming women's bootcamp.  Thanks once again to Susie and Janet for coordinating this event and we look forward to recruiting some new female members after the bootcamp.

The results of the 2020 Club Survey have been considered; thank you to all of those who took the time to provide their feedback.  A copy of the results can be found here.

There remains strong interest in additional sessions, with a Thursday evening being the most preferred additional training time.  Members are also keen to see the club access the new Gunyama Park pool at Green Square - we remain in discussion with the City of Sydney/Belgravia Leisure about hiring lanes at the new pool and will advise if and when an arrangement is confirmed.

Keep an eye out for some upcoming coaching masterclasses.  The coaching team has been working on a program of in-depth classes focussing on each of the four strokes.  More details to follow soon - these will be popular and space will be limited; if you're keen, be sure to sign up straight away!

Membership renewals

The Committee agreed to write to non-renewing members with one final reminder of their overdue membership status.  We also agreed to undertake an audit of the Members Only Facebook page and remove non-member access.  Those members who have not renewed for 2021 are kindly asked to renew before Sunday 28 February 2021.

New member video

By now you will probably have seen the new member video (if not, scroll up and watch it!), which was put together by Mason.  Thanks to all involved, especially to James and Megan for being the voice of Wett Ones throughout the video, and Oscar for being our demo coach.  We strongly encourage anyone thinking about giving Wett Ones, or squad swimming, a go to watch the video first.

Prospective members are reminded of the need to be able to swim a variety of strokes and the ability to swim at least 1km over the course of an hour.  Wett Ones is not a learn to swim club - coaches may offer stroke correction advice but are not in a position to teach someone how to swim.

The Committee will undertake a review and refresh of the club's website, with a focus on ensuring the information is clear and relevant to existing and prospective members.

Sara is busily sorting out a programme of social events for the year ahead.  Subject, obviously, to COVID restrictions, we look forward to getting back into a social groove as much as possible.  We have a Mardi Gras-themed picnic event on 6 March (details below) and it would be great to see you all there!  It's also good to see our Wednesday night dinners at The Royal have resumed (including with cake!) and discussions continue about how to best mark our 30th birthday.  We'll be back in touch with more on that soon.

As I said at the top of this email, to think that we were all in Melbourne 12 months ago swimming at IGLA demonstrates how much the world has changed in such a short space of time.  The past 12 months have seen many clubs struggle to resume swimming with access to pools limited by space restrictions or the pools being closed altogether.  We remain fortunate to be largely operating back to normal.

i encourage everyone to consider participating in the upcoming Swim Challenge being co-hosted by Swimming NSW and Masters Swimming NSW.  This Swim League-like event will be lots of fun, and will be followed with a few drinks at Abattoir Blues.  Registration details below.

Happy swimming!

Get into the spirit of Mardi Gras with an afternoon picnic in Jubilee Park, Glebe on Saturday 6 March 2021.

We've arranged for dancing lessons from a Moulin Rouge-trained professional, some Finska and good times with the Wett Ones family.

To secure your learn to dance spot, purchase a ticket below.  Otherwise, BYO picnic and drinks for a relaxed Saturday afternoon in the park!

Entry is $25 and you'll be placed in a team by the meet organisers.  There's already lots of Wetties registered - don't miss your chance to be part of the fun!
