SERMON NUGGETS

Matthew 5:21-37

Why do we gather every Sunday anyway? Why continue this ancient practice over and over again? By using the title, “Lifted,” I hope that this reflection will refuel more our inspiration for worship gatherings, by answering the question, “Why Do We Gather Anyway?”
WE GATHER TO LIFT EACH OTHER UP
Hebrews 10:25—do not give up meeting together, because by doing so we encourage one another. In worship gatherings, we lift each other up.
  • We do this when we share and listen to each other’s prayer concerns.
  • We do this when we stay after worship and fellowship with one another.
  • We do this when we participate in the passing of the peace.
Sometimes the most spiritual experience you’ll get on Sunday morning is to be reminded that you are not alone. That whatever you’re going through, in our worship space--you are loved, held, and celebrated. This is in fact why we gather--because we need each other.
WE GATHER TO LIFT UP OUR HEARTS OF PRAISE
  • Psalm 134:2—Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and praise the Lord.
  • Psalm 68—Sing praises, lift up your song to God.
  • Lam. 3—Lift up your hearts and hands to God.
This act of lifting up is an ancient gesture of offering. It’s an act of humble recognition of who is truly the reason, the center, and the sole audience of worship. Worship is not meant to be another consumer product that is meant to satisfy us. It is not meant as another local business that we rate with low stars or 5 stars. For a change, may Sunday morning be a time that takes our attention from ourselves, so God will be the focused.
  • We do this when we sing our hymns & praise songs from our hearts.
  • We do this when we give our offerings
  • We do this when we share a prayer of joy.
If this church building will be called with only one thing, it should be called a house of praise. Where our grateful hearts rises up like fragrant incense—a pleasing offering of appreciation and love.

WE GATHER TO BE LIFTED BY THE SPIRIT
Matthew 11:28—Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest.
God knows we pick up these burdens every now and then and so God designed a Sabbath day and made the invitation so clear, “Come, lay down your burden. Come, take my rest.”
  • We receive this when we hear the reading of scriptures.
  • We receive this when we hear the sermon.
  • We receive this when we are encouraged by the words in our hymns.
And so today, may we celebrate the worship, fellowship and missional work that we create in our worship space. There we lift up each other. There we lift up our God. There we are lifted up so when we go out, we have renewed strength to serve the world.
