Not your father's church. TOBE DesignGroup was recently hired to redesign the parlor of Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ. A major design challenge was ensuring this multi-purpose room would be inviting yet remain flexible for its vast uses from social gatherings and meetings to funeral services.  The space also needed to appeal to elderly congregants, yet be attractive enough to draw younger and new ones alike.  Acoustics were equally a large consideration, as this room sits directly beneath the sanctuary.

While still respecting the church's traditional architecture, a contemporary feel was realized with careful selection of furniture, light fixtures and finishes.  The ceiling height was embellished with tile, as well as, a drywall perimeter for added noise reduction from the sanctuary above. Dimmers were installed so the architectural and decorative lighting could easily adjust to reflect the varying moods of each event.  And a center hall table was custom designed with drop leaves and gate-legs, enabling rearrangement of the space as necessary. All on a modest budget. To learn more about our projects, visit
