MEET WALT MILLER, OUR PORT DIRECTOR
Role: Walt has served as port director of Port St. Pete since June 2004. He also manages the Municipal Marina, which is the largest municipal marina in Florida.
Experience: Walt has overseen a number of significant infrastructure improvements at the port, such as the complete renovation of the 1,200-foot long wharf. Other upgrades and new conveniences include shore power via new 400 and 600 amp pedestals, fuel and sewage pump-out, lighting and security. The port also completed construction of the SRI Research and Development Center, a marine/science research facility. Its current project includes working with the St. Pete Ocean Team to implement the Port Master Plan concept ‘Port Discovery,’ a marine science/research, educationally-focused partnership initiative.
Get to know him: Walt enjoys meeting yacht captains and their crews and will go out of his way to make the port home to them during their visit. Some of the perks to visiting yachts include discounted dock rates (just ask!), an easy-to-navigate port with on-site maintenance and a variety of vendors, concierge services, specials at local restaurants, nearby airports and so much more. Walt's love for everything maritime was developed over his active duty career in the U.S. Coast Guard, which included serving as command of two coast guard cutters and command of the U.S. Coast Guard Group St. Petersburg.
We're proud to offer visiting vessels access to a large variety of maintenance vendors, many of which have provided maintenance services for some very famous yachts. First Choice Marine is among those. The maintenance team specializes in Mercury Verado outboard motors, mid-four stroke motors and small four stroke motors.
"We do a lot of fishing tournament boats," said Dan Hamilton, president of First Choice Marine. "Boats go to Biloxi for a tournament, for example, without ever being tested so they have to be right when they leave." First Choice Marine's main priority is being available to customers at all times and getting the job done right the first time.
"My phone forwards to my cell and customers can always get a hold of me," said Hamilton. "If they are broken down, we do what we can to get them going. I really enjoy what I do. It's easy to get into this business if you have the ability and enjoy it. The sky's the limit."
Food Truck Rally: Join us for our upcoming events on 12/16 and 1/20 and enjoy food, wine and beer, waterfront dining and free admission.
Sunshine Music and Blues Festival: Two music events will become one on 1/14 in beautiful Vinoy Park. Enjoy two stages featuring artists such as Tedeschi Trucks Band, Joe Russo's Almost Dead, Bruce Hornsby and more.
Annual MUSE Benefit for the Arts:
