Caroline Mackenzie - Volunteer of the Year 2020

We are very pleased and proud to announce that Caroline has won the "Volunteer of the Year", one of the prestigious annual volunteer awards from British Orienteering. Caroline's contributions to the club have been many and varied. She was CLOK chair throughout the period, and co-organiser of a day of the JK 2020. When that was cancelled she found endless enthusiasm to steer the club through a very difficult year, finding creative ways to get orienteering opportunities going again. Either by herself, or through the encouragement of others, we have upgraded existing Permanent Orienteering Courses, put on Virtual Orienteering Courses and Virtual Running Routes, and staged real events when restrictions allowed. Looking to the future she also led a successful grant application with the Orienteering Foundation to support the club contracting the services of a Club Development Officer. Well done and thanks from us all! You can see the full announcement and Caroline's "acceptance speech" on the British Orienteering website here.

Scottish 6 days - entry deadline this Saturday

The Scottish 6-days is a biennial event (thanks to the eagle eyed reader last week who corrected me on saying it was biannual!), comprising six orienteering races over a week (with one "rest day" in the middle!), usually in excellent, technical Scottish terrain. This year the event is based around Fort William. There are multiple closing dates with increasing entry fees, and the second of the three deadlines is this Saturday 30th April. Full details and entry information on the 6 days website here.

Yvette Baker Trophy

The Yvette Baker Trophy is the premier junior inter-club competition for English and Welsh clubs. It is named after Britain's first World Orienteering Champion, who won Gold in the Short Distance event in Scotland in 1999. The North East heat for the 2021 Yvette Baker will take place on Sunday 16th May in Errington Woods (details on the CLOK website soon).
The YB is a competition for junior competitors (18 and under) and uses the yellow, orange, light green and green courses. This year CLOK qualifies for the smaller club competition - the Yvette Baker Shield. We need to get as many juniors to the event as possible, with a good spread across all 4 colour courses, where men / women score separately, hence 8 sets of results, with points awarded 100, 99, 98 etc.
Could any runners attending please contact me and I will enter you. Junior entry fees for Yvette Baker are paid by the club. I will spread people throughout the courses, some may end running a course below their normal courses to help the team, and if I need people to run up I will discuss with you first. In the hopeful outcome of us qualifying for the final, I will circulate details in due course (including if there is likely any impact of ongoing Covid restrictions).

New Virtual Running Routes

We have two new Virtual Running Routes available at Tees Barrage. VRRs are like Virtual Orienteering Courses, except the MapRun app shows you your current locations. Ideal for novices, but also still a worthy test for experienced orienteers looking for a good time. Details of the new VRRs can be found here, and more background on VRRs here.
