Connor Smith - New Schools Development Officer

We are delighted to announce that Connor Smith has been appointed as our new Schools Development Officer. Once Covid restrictions allow, his first objective will be to revive and expand our schools orienteering programme (as well as picking Mike Hardy's brain and taking over his numerous schools contacts!). You can read more about the role, and about Connor, on the website here. I'm sure we'll be hearing lots more from Connor in the coming weeks and months, but meanwhile we wish Connor every success in this key role for our Klub.

We are still seeking a Club Development Officer. We did have a strong candidate but sadly they weren't able to take up the position, so the search continues.

New Instagram account and photo competition

Many of you will be familiar with our Facebook page. We also have a Twitter account which hasn't seen much traffic but we plan to revive.

Now - as one of his first contributions to the club - Connor has created us a new Instagram account (@ClevelandOrienteeringClub). For those of you who don't know, Instagram is a free social media platform for sharing photos and videos. This will be a great platform for promoting our orienteering and schools activities.

To help get people engaged with the account, you are encouraged to submit any photos via Connor is also going to run a "photo of the week" competition. Photos can be of anything related to orienteering including racing, training, or landscape. So get busy with your cameras!

Joe Wright trophy

This award is presented to a club member who in the opinion of the committee has made a significant contribution to the club in the last year. Whilst orienteering and club activities in 2020 have been restricted due to Covid-19 there has been a considerable amount of activity within the club and we plan to make the award for 2020. Please send any nominations to John Green, club secretary (email) by March 28th. Please note the award cannot be given to someone who has won the award within the last 5 years details - see who that is in the hall of fame

EGM notice - Thursday April 1st

The club intends to register as a Community Amateur Sports Club. This is to help with receiving payments from schools activities. However registration requires some minor changes to the club's constitution, including what would happen to funds or equipment in the unlikely event the club is disbanded. To approve this change we need an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM). This being planned for April 1st, 7pm via Zoom, and we require 20% of the current membership to approve the change. Further details can be found here (and rest assured we'll keep reminding you!) and proxy voting will be available nearer the time. If anyone has any feedback before the proposed EGM please contact John Green, club secretary (email).

New MapRun website

There is a new website at This shows a UK map of all the MapRun course locations, with filtering by club, and links to copies of the maps, and results pages. Happy browsing for your next course, or checking out the results!

Peter Palmer Junior Relay

The Peter Palmer Junior Team Relay was established by Peter Palmer, then Director of Coaching for British Orienteering. Peter wanted to create a junior relay, similar to those in Scandinavia, which incorporated legs which would be completed in the dark. The current format consists of 6 legs of differing length and technical difficulty: Red – Red – Light Green – Orange – Yellow – Green. Usually two legs are completed in the dark, with the third being at dawn (of course this depends how fast people run!). Two years ago a second "day break" race was added, consisting of 4 legs: Red – Orange – Yellow – Red, starting as the sun rises, and giving smaller clubs with limited junior runners a chance to complete.

The 2020 event had to be cancelled and WCOC are keen to know if clubs are interested in competing this year, at Haswe End, near Keswick on the first weekend of September 2021. If any junior is interested in taking part in this unique event, or would like more information, please contact Alan Cranke know (email).

Kiplin Hall event - Thursday 8th April

We are very pleased to let you know that - subject to the Covid restrictions being lifted according to the Government's roadmap - we're going to put on a virtual sprint orienteering event at Kiplin Hall on Thursday 8th April. It's an afternoon weekday event, but it's during the school Easter holidays so we hope that many of you will be able to come along.

We are privileged to have been given access to the Kiplin Hall grounds on a day when they're shut to the members of the public. It would obviously have been rather difficult for us orienteers to comply with Kiplin Hall's normal one-way system while competing! Many thanks to Marion Archer for negotiating the access permission.

The event information is now available here on the CLOK web site, and online entries are open. As per our current 'new normal', you must pre-enter via the CLOK Entry System. There will be no entry on the day.

The courses have been planned by Phill Batts, who also planned the very enjoyable sprint courses in Darlington's South Park last year. I’m sure Phill's Kiplin Hall courses will provide fast, furious and tricky orienteering, making full use of MapRun's capabilities to test your fine navigation! So, please come along to this event.  I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
