Club and Schools Developer Officer posts - update

Many of you will remember that at the October AGM we agreed to go ahead with contracting a Club Development Officer (CDO). This is a paid part-time contract, half funded by CLOK, and half by a grant from the Orienteering Foundation for three years. The goal of the CDO would be to increase CLOK’s membership and involvement in club activities, particularly targeting those in their 20's / 30's, and / or those with young families. The contract will include organising suitable events / activities, and using varied forms of advertising to attract and retain newcomers (e.g. social media).

Meanwhile Mike Hardy is finally fully retiring from being our Schools Development Officer (SDO). Over the years our schools program has delivered orienteering to tens of thousands of school children, and generated the same in surplus income for the club, but in recent years Mike has stepped back, and the program is currently just "reactive". The committee would like to bring it back, this time as another part-time contract as with the CDO, to both provide more schools orienteering opportunities, and benefit again from significant income a strong schools program can generate.

The committee, led by Caroline, are actively reviewing outlines of both contracts, and preparing adverts for them. Watch this space! Successfully applicants could either be from within the club, or outside it but with a strong sports development interest, so if you know of anyone who might be interested in either (the two are separate, although in theory one person could do both), you can think about warming them up to the idea!

Lockdown orienteering

A reminder of individual training opportunities at present:
  • MapRun courses - See CLOK's courses here, and also those from in neighbouring clubs: EBORCLARONN
  • Lamp O challenges - From November / December, with control points at lamp posts. See the list of challenges here.
  • Virtual Running Routes - Similar to regular VOCs, but the MapRunF app also displays your current position and route so far. See our VRRs here.
Many of these have been available for a while now, but they include an all new set MapRun courses around central Darlington, planning courtesy of Malcolm Hewitson: see here (and segment of map above).

The Run In podcast

For those of you who haven't come across it, The Run In is the UK's orienteering podcast. Presented by Katherine Bett and Will Gardner, it often focuses on elite orienteering, but occasionally dips into others areas. With the CDO/SDO projects in mind, this week's show is particularly timely - an interview with Pauline and Peter Tryner from SYO, who have been instrumental in their schools program and developing their club. You can find The Run In on facebook and listen to podcasts via Stitcher (on the web or via the app).

Club membership renewals

A new year, and time to renew your membership. Existing members should have received an email from British Orienteering, and those who pay by direct debit will have been renewed automatically. Otherwise you will need to go to the British Orienteering website and login to renew online. We hope as many of you as possible do this, despite the current lockdown restrictions, looking forward to better times ahead in 2021!
