As the harrowing, horrifying, violent acts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolds, our hearts break. Such atrocities serve as a terrible reminder that we live in a sin-cursed earth.
Make no mistake, sin is the greatest weapon of unrighteousness (Rom. 6:13), and Christ’s kingdom is “not of this world” (Jn. 18:36). Scripture calls all who claim the name of Christ to remember: you are in a spiritual war.
Our war is not against flesh and blood (2 Cor. 10:3; Eph. 6:12a), but against powers of darkness (Eph. 6:12b) and our ancient foe (Eph. 6:11) who, as a roaring lion, seeks to devour and ruin us (1 Pe. 5:8). Christians are at war against an anti-Christ worldview (Rom. 8:7), the sin in all of us (Rom. 7:18), and the devil (1 Jn. 2:15–17).
But do not fear (2 Tim. 1:7), fellow Christ-follower, for all authorities and powers are subjected unto King Jesus’ rule (1 Pe. 3:22). Christ reigns! Your soul is safe in Christ alone (Rom. 8:15). By faith, your body shall rise again with Him in glory (1 Pe. 1:3).
But do not become lax in the faith (Ti. 2:5; 1 Pe. 5:8a) because those raised with Christ (1 Pe. 1:5)—if by the good will of God (1 Pet. 4:16, 19)—may also suffer for Christ (Heb. 11:35; 2 Th. 1:4–5; Phil. 3:10).
Therefore, bolster your faith by renewing your mind in truth (Eph. 6:14; Rom. 12:1–2). Take your faith seriously by taking up the “whole armor” of God (Eph. 6:13). Do not cease to pray (1 Pet. 4:7), but with vigilance make constant intercessory prayer for all the saints (Eph. 6:18)—especially those in Ukraine in this dark hour.
Call to Global Gospel Prayer:
Pray that the powerful gospel message (Rom. 1:16; Eph. 6:15) will break down spiritual strongholds (2 Cor. 10:4) through a display of courageous Christian faith in chaos and bold gospel proclamation in Jesus name in Taiwan, in Ukraine, and all around the world (including Russia).
Word of Encouragement:
Stand ready always to give an answer of the hope you have in Christ (1 Pe. 3:15)—that there is forgiveness of sins in Jesus name (Lk. 24:47; 1 Jn. 2:12) for anyone and everyone who repents and believes (Acts 2:38).
Our Commitment to Christ:
We wish for Christ’s name to be made known to the nations. That God’s will be done, and His kingdom come. We will hold onto the hope of the resurrection as Christ holds on to us. We will keep living out each day in child-like dependance on God. Pray God will grant us discerning wisdom and courageous faith for the days ahead as we continue to serve here in Taiwan.
