February 2017
Principal's Corner
Ravenwood is a HAPPY place to learn!   Some of the "extras" our students have enjoyed this month include 5th Grade Winter Camp, Valentine's Day, 100th Day of School, Spelling Bee, Pirate Day, Author Visit, Family Skate Night, Book Fair, Conferences, and much more!  Of course, we do all of this in conjunction with our rigorous academics, which is why attendance is important, and we don't want our students to miss out on any of the wonderful learning and extras.

Our PTA is sponsoring Family Skate Night tonight, so we hope you can come and enjoy some outdoor winter recreation activities with your family from 5:30 - 7:30 pm.

Remember, next week, there is no school on Monday (Feb. 20th) and Friday (24th), and students are released at 12:30 pm on Wednesday and Thursday, so we can meet with families for Parent Teacher Conferences.  We look forward to sharing your child's progress with you!

I invite you to take a few minutes to read through this month's newsletter to see some of the things we have been up to, as well as upcoming events here at Ravenwood.

Please contact me any time you have questions or concerns about our learning community.

Warmly,
Mrs. Bautista
PTA FAMILY ICE SKATING NIGHT 5:30 - 7:30 PM
Please join us tonight for our annual Family Skate Night. Come ice skate, sled, snowshoe, or cross country ski from 5:30-7:30 pm, and enjoy chili and hot chocolate. They are also holding a raffle with the prizes being artwork from some of our wonderful student classes. All the profits will go towards replacing old and unusable winter sport gear for our PE and Active Kids programs. You can purchase tickets at the event tonight, or after school from 3:15-4:45. We hope to see everyone here tonight!
HAPPY HUNDREDTH DAY OF SCHOOL . . . Our Kindergartners and 1st graders celebrated being 100 days SMARTER and finding LOTS of ways to count to 100!
In PE, students learned how to build Quinzhees . . .
PTA NEWS
Spring is quickly approaching, and the PTA is off to a fast start in the new year.  Our next big event is Family Skate Night on Friday, February 17.  Equipment will be available to borrow from the gym.  Your family will be able to enjoy cross-country ski, snowshoe, ice skate, and sled.   Hot cocoa and chili will also be available.  Also, prints made by the kindergarten, first, and second grade classes will be available to win.  We look forward to seeing everybody there!
We are excited to announce that the spring Scholastic Book Fair will be on February 22 and 23.  This is a great opportunity to support the library.
There will be two PTA meetings this spring.  The first meeting is on Wednesday, March 22 at 4:30 pm.  Finally, we will hold PTA executive board elections at our second meeting on Wednesday, May 10 at 6:00 pm.  Thank you so much for your support of the Ravenwood Elementary PTA!

NEED S'MORE BOOKS?
COME TO THE BOOK FAIR!

The school's winter book fair is starting, and will be held the week of Parent Teacher Conferences. The book fair helps encourage kids to read by providing them with books they like, enjoy, and can keep at home. This is also a great way to support your student's homerooms and library by purchasing from wish lists that have been created specifically for this fair.

See you at the Book Fair!
Overdrive:  Families can use their student’s library ID number to access a full assortment of ebooks via ASD’s Overdrive. You can download Battle Books as well as audiobooks for the whole family. You can download the Overdrive app on Google Play or access the Overdrive site directly by going to: http://bit.ly/2jjqtWN

Chinese Club: In February we will be opening up a beginning Chinese club. This will be open for Grades 3-6 on Thursdays from 4-4:30. We will be learning to speak, write, and read Chinese. We also have some fun crafts planned. Space is limited to 15 max.

Anchorage Public Library Card: You may have noticed your student came home with a blue library card from Anchorage Public Library. This is a bridging of services between ASD and APL. With this card your student and family can explore the variety of services APL, has to offer, i.e., music downloads, movies, ebooks, etc. without applying for a new card with the public library. If you have any questions about the use of this card, please contact me in the library. I am available for small one on one family training sessions by appointment. Please call the school office to be connected.  Sign-up for these cards is once a year during registration.

As always, overdue slips have been handed out.  Students have four ways of settling fines at ASD schools:
First: Return the book.
Second: Pay the fine.
Third: Replace the book with a new book of similar value.
Fourth: Work off the fine. Five dollars is offered for every half hour of work.

If you should have any questions about your student’s account, please call the library or stop by.

Your Librarian,
Mr. Brown

5TH GRADE WINTER SURVIVAL CAMP . . . THANK YOU TO THE MILITARY PARTNERS at 1st SQUADRON 40TH CAV, THE PARENTS, SPECIAL GUESTS, VOLUNTEERS AND OUR TEACHERS FOR MAKING THIS AN AMAZING TRADITION AT RAVENWOOD!
Students enjoyed a visit from Alaskan author Tricia Brown this week, who shared her stories and the writing process with each grade level.  Thank you Student Council for helping to co-sponsor this year's author visit for our school.  Order forms are still available if you would like to order a autographed copy of one of her MANY books.
SPELLING BEE CHAMPION AND RUNNER-UP
Congratulations to Madelyn Roberts and Isaac McCarthy for winning performances at our school Spelling Bee.  We wish Madelyn all the best as she represents Ravenwood at this year's State Spelling Bee.
UAA SEAWOLVES HOCKEY PLAYERS READ TO
MS. VANHAASTERT'S CLASS
as part of a special Sea Wolves Reading Incentive Program!  Go, Seawolves!
Your child has the opportunity to purchase a license to Math-Whizz for only $17! This is a considerable savings from buying the program online. These licenses will be active until October 2017 from wherever in the world you have access to the internet. Math-Whizz is an interactive math tutorial program that is presently being used by ASD as a tier II intervention to assist students in becoming proficient at grade level. However, the program covers grades K – 8 and can also be used to accelerate a student’s math level. If you would like more information about Math-Whizz, log on to www.whizz.us.

Ravenwood will be collecting checks for a one-time group order. The office needs to have your check (payable to “Ravenwood”) by March 9th, if you would like to purchase a license for your child(ren). One license/form per child. You will receive account information by April 1st.  Questions? Ask Mrs. Milwicz or Mrs. Hamilton.
Gruening Middle School Concert
Wednesday, March 1, 7:00 – 7:45 PM

Once again, Gruening Middle School has invited the first eighty 6th graders from Mrs. Elder's seven orchestra classes, to participate in their March 1 concert with them.  Students will need parental permission, and the concert is optional.  At the end of the concert, all the students will play a tune written by Mrs. Elder.  This is a fun time for the sixth graders to hear how well they will play if they stay in orchestra in middle school.  Parents and friends are invited.  Interested 6th graders need to return permission slips from Mrs. Elder ASAP to participate!
THANK YOU FOR BEING EXTRA SAFE IN OUR PARKING LOT AND CAR RIDER LANE:
  • Use caution in the parking lot - 5 mph., follow the signs/traffic flow, and stay focused (don't drive distracted).
  • Honor the designated Preschool Parking spaces so our tiny tots can get in and out of their cars safely.
  • In the car rider loop, please pull forward to top of loop, to load/unload students.
  • "Stop, drop, and roll" to keep the traffic flowing. Please do not get out of your vehicle.  If you need to assist with seat belts, please use the parking lot.

How is our school doing? Are we welcoming and inviting? Do we have high expectations? Does your child feel safe at school? Please let us know by completing a simple survey of our school’s climate and connectedness.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ASDFamily2017

The results of this survey help us gauge how we’re doing as a school and as a district. Results also help measure progress toward our Destination 2020 parent satisfaction and student safety goals. Our goals and areas of focus are based on your responses, so it’s important to us that you complete this survey. We appreciate your time and consideration.

The survey deadline is Feb. 24, but we appreciate early responses.
