January 2017
Principal's Corner
I hope your new year is off to a great start!  At Ravenwood, our students continue to excel as was evident at our 2nd Quarter Student Recognition Assemblies where many of them were recognized for academic, teacher's choice, and SEL (social and emotional learning) awards.  It was a joy to see so many of you here to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments.

Please take a few minutes to read through this month's newsletter to find out more about Visit Our Schools Month, our Lego Robotics team, 5/6 Battle of the Books, annual surveys, nominating a teacher for BP Teacher of Excellence, and some student assessments that are heading our way.   The Calendar Section at the bottom highlights upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences, PTA Family Movie Night, and some student holidays.

Thank you for your engagement in your child's education here at Ravenwood.  My door is open, and you are welcome to contact me any time you have questions or concerns about our learning community.

Mrs. Bautista
Congratulations to our Ravenwood Robo Raven Lego Robotics team! They competed in December where they qualified for the FIRST Lego State Tournament January 14th at Goldenview Middle School.  This year's team consists of Marin Campbell, Alex Lehman, Keean MacIssac, Connor Slocombe, and Jonathan Charlestream coached by parent Mr. Reggie Slocombe. These hard working students spent Winter Break problem-solving and engineering new lego tools to use with the robot in completing the timed missions.  They represented Ravenwood well, finishing 29th out of 60 teams, demonstrating great teamwork, sportsmanship, and the Core Values of First Lego League.  Way to go!
Robo Ravens Team competing at State Tournament earlier this month above, and at the qualifying meet in December.
Our Hand Chimes and Choir will NOT be meeting until 4th Quarter.  Mr. Lum will send out information when these student activities will resume.
Baby, it's COLD outside!  Thank you for sending students to school dressed for the COLD temperatures.  Students need a coat, hat, snow pants, gloves, and boots to safely enjoy recess and PE activities.  Remember, students go outside unless the temperature reaches below -10 degrees.
Nominate an Outstanding Teacher

In addition to its annual tradition of honoring teachers for the 21st year, BP Alaska is also accepting nominations for the new BP Educational Allies award, recognizing additional unsung heroes in Alaska's schools, such as principals, counselors, teacher assistants, and more.
Anyone can nominate a BP Teacher of Excellence or an Educational Ally by visiting The deadline for nominations is
Feb. 1, 2017.
The office staff would like to thank everyone for their thoughtful holiday wishes and generous gifts. You added tremendous joy to our festivities and our families also appreciated the treats. We appreciate the kindness you showed, and that you included us in your holiday giving. We are very thankful to be a part of the Ravenwood community and are looking forward to seeing you in the new year.

Each spring, schools give the statewide assessment to students in grades 3-10. This test provides students the opportunity to show their understanding of important skills in English language arts, mathematics, and science at their grade level.  The testing window for administering these tests is Mar. 28 - April 28.  Be on the look-out for our testing scheduling and more info. soon.

Our 5th and 6th grade team competed this week at West High School in the District Tournament where they came in 10th place for the district.  Way to go, Zhenja Wallin, Jessica Blackwood, Marin Campbell, Kelsey Reifel, Iris Jones, Chae Nunez, McKenna Aquino, and Ada Harkrider.
Salad Bar Discontinued Until Further Notice
Student Nutrition has eliminated the popular salad bar while they examine more cost-effective options to provide salad and fresh vegetables to students more likely in a single serving type and not a salad bar offering.
Lunch Account Balances
You can now get notification when your child’s lunch account balance runs low. Parents can enter information in Zangle ParentConnection to receive an email or phone call once their child's balance is below the threshold that the parent sets. Once logged in to Zangle, select Online Payments and then Student Balance Notifications.

Teacher and Administrator Evaluations

Parents, students, staff, and community members are given the opportunity to provide information about teacher and administrator performance. The input forms are shared with the person's immediate supervisor. Forms are available until May 6.

Input can be submitted electronically or via paper form.
