December 2016
Principal's Corner
I hope this newsletter finds you enjoying this "most wonderful time of the year" with family and friends.  One thing that makes the season so wonderful is the opportunity to create and continue special traditions and rituals, whether they are rooted in your own family culture, or adopted from the friends and neighbors you have come to know over the years.  It’s important to create traditions you and your children can fondly recall and perpetuate in the years to come.

At Ravenwood, we have a number of traditions we use to help students become compassionate, caring, and peaceful citizens.  One tradition is our participation in the Lion’s Club Annual Food Drive. Another is the cultivating a love for our great outdoors.  Ice Skating, sledding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing are part of our awesome PE program, and we are happy to offer both ice skating and sledding during recess (see schedule and expectations below).  We live in a winter wonderland, so let’s enjoy it!

Over the next couple of weeks, I will continue a new tradition of sharing the gift of reading and time with each class and teacher.   I really enjoy the opportunity to go into each class and share some favorite holiday books, while giving the teachers a little “extra” time.

In addition to wrapping up 2nd quarter, there’s special field trips, Hour of Code, art/craft projects, music programs, theater production of Peter Pan, and so much more!  Please read through the rest of this newsletter to find out what’s happening, and contact us if you ever have questions/concerns.

I encourage you to keep and create special memories and traditions with your family this holiday season. On behalf of the Ravenwood staff, we wish all of our families a safe and peaceful holiday.

Warmly,
Mrs. Bautista

We have extended our collection time for the Annual  Lions' Club Christmas Canned Food Drive.  We are hoping to help stock the shelves of our local food bank.  Please send in non-perishable food items to help with this effort by Wed., Dec. 14th.  The primary and intermediate class bringing in the most items will have a special "thank you" hot chocolate and cookie celebration.
COMPUTER CODE - FASTEST GROWING LANGUAGE!
Last week was Computer Learning Week, and our school participated in Hour of Code. Ross Johnson, ASD Ed. Tech Teacher Expert K-12, brought some ozobots and showed students how to draw paths of code, while other students used one of the many computer programs on Code.org designed to teach coding. Students (and the whole family) can explore and learn computer coding by going to Code.org.  Happy coding!
MUSICALLY SPEAKING . . .
Ravenwood's band, orchestra, choir and hand chimes will present a joint Winter Concert on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 6:30 pm for families. Please come support these talented young musicians as they perform a variety of fun tunes!
PETER PAN
Our Drama Club is ready to take us back to Neverland in their stage performance of Peter Pan next week.  Mrs. Hunter and Mrs. King have partnered with Alaska Fine Arts Academy to prepare the students, props, sets, and costumes for a memorable evening on Dec. 21st at 7 pm in the gym.

Ice Rink is now open, and will be used at recess on:
Wednesdays:  K, 1st, 2nd & 3rd

Fridays:   4th, 5th, & 6th
ICE RINK EXPECTATIONS
Our expectations to operate a safe and fun rink are as follows:
-Hat, gloves, and a coat are required for all students and snow pants are required for students in grades K-3.
-Multi sport helmets or winter sports helmets are required for all students as they are designed for a backwards fall common in ice skating accidents. Sorry, bike helmets are not allowed!

-Rubber or plastic guards to protect the floors and for everyone’s safety as they travel to and from the rink.
-Students wanting to skate at lunch recess must be able to tie their own skates.
-Skating safely and responsibly is expected.

Thank you for supporting a fun and safe recess this winter!!
RAVENWOOD LIBRARY NEWS
Introducing Our New Librarian
Dear Ravenwood Families,

I want to thank you for inviting me to be a part of your school community as your librarian. I was previously the librarian at Alaska Native Cultural Charter School and have also spent almost a decade working in China as a teacher. I received my master’s degree in library science from the University of Southern California. My undergraduate degree is in English with an emphasis in Post Colonial Literature from Southern Oregon University. Though I was raised in Oregon, my family has been in Alaska since the early 50s.

Allow me a moment to remind families that of the school’s policy for lost books and fines. There are three ways fines can be taken care of:
  1. Paying the fine outright
  2. The student may work off the fine in the library
  3. Donation of a new book to replace the lost one (must be of comparable price)
As always, contact me first if your student cannot find her book.

I am always open to questions, concerns, and ideas from our school community. Even more, I invite parents and families to be involved with the school library. We have opportunities to volunteer all the time. Please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
David Brown, MMLIS

THANK YOU FOR BEING EXTRA SAFE IN OUR PARKING LOT AND CAR RIDER LANE:
  • Use caution in the parking lot - 5 mph., follow the signs/traffic flow, and stay focused (don't drive distracted).
  • Honor the designated Preschool Parking spaces so our tiny tots can get in and out of their cars safely.
  • In the car rider loop, please DO NOT get out of your vehicles. Just "stop, drop, and roll" to keep the traffic flowing. If you need to assist with seat belts, please use the parking lot.
