November 2016
This newsletter is dedicated to 19 year old Jonathan Zollinger, a former Ravenwood student who passed away in a tragic car accident on November 15. Jon and his siblings were part of our school community for many years.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.
Principal's Corner
Ravenwood is a school where good things abound, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to be the lead learner of this school community. We have awesome students, supportive families, and wonderful school business partners.  Just yesterday, I was overwhelmed to accept a check from our PTA for $21, 222.69 to support our technology and STEM lab development (proceeds from the Trek for Tech this fall).  I hope Ravenwood Elementary School makes your grateful list!

Did you know that an attitude of gratitude can measurably change people’s lives?  According to University of California Psychology Professor Dr. Robert Emmons, “gratitude helps us cope better with stress, gives us greater health, and increases positive feelings of hope, peace, and happiness.” Good is everywhere; it’s a matter of being conscious to its presence.

If you are looking for a great source of inspiration this Thanksgiving season, I invite you to watch “A Good Day” narrated by Brother David Steindl-Rast (see below). Nearing 90, Brother David has lived through a world war, the takeover of his country, and his TED talk on gratitude has received more than five million views.  Enjoy the video or check out his website  http://gratefulness.org/website, to inspire your “attitude of gratitude.”

Thank you for taking a few minutes find out more about tomorrow night’s PTA Family Movie Night, the 5th Annual Turkey Trot, JNYO, and so much more!

On behalf of grateful staff, we wish all of our students and their families a Happy Thanksgiving!

Warmly,
Mrs. Bautista

RAVENWOOD LIBRARY NEWS
Interviewing For A New Librarian
Our librarian was granted medical leave for the remainder of the school year, so a team of staff members, including two student representatives (Ella Lukasik and Connor Slocombe) will be interviewing final candidates to find the best possible librarian for our school community.  Stay tuned!

Playaway Audiobook Devices
Thanks to our PTA, we have a number of audiobook devices called Playaways.  Similar to an MP3 player, each device contains a single audio book. These devices are available for check out, along with a print copy of the book for students to read along while they listen. Due to the cost of replacing these items, Parent/guardian permission is required before student check out.  Playaway policy and guidelines forms are available and must be returned to the library by interested families before check out.

Ravenwood PTA Monthly Update

Dear Families,
October was another great month for the PTA and our school!  The big event this month was Harvest Festival.   I want to take a moment to publically thank all of our volunteers: teachers, students, parents, Boy Scouts, and the Air Force Junior ROTC. We had over 700 people participate in Harvest Festival, and we made over $1,000 for the PTA.   November and December are going to be extremely busy with all of the upcoming events.

Thank you so much for all of your support! Please join us in the upcoming events.

Take Care,
Brad Carlson
PTA President

  • Please keep dogs at home to avoid a potential risk to students.
  • Use caution in the parking lot - 5 mph., follow the signs/traffic flow, and stay focused (don't drive distracted).
  • Honor the designated Preschool Parking spaces so our tiny tots can get in and out of their cars safely.
  • In the car rider loop, please DO NOT get out of your vehicles. Just "stop, drop, and roll" to keep the traffic flowing. If you need to assist with seat belts, please use the parking lot.

GEOGRAPHY SPIRIT DAY – This week is Geography Awareness Week, which ushers in our next Student Council Spirit Day – students are encouraged to wear clothes representing their culture, or at the least clothing bearing the name of a place they've visited.  Alaska grown, anyone?!

THANKFUL GRAMS Student Council sold Thankful grams during lunch time.  Each paper gram comes with a lollipop and can be personalized with a special message and will be delivered to classes next week.
HONORING ALASKA'S HERITAGE
We kicked off Native Alaska and American Indian Heritage Month with an assembly hosted by Nicole Johnston (Head Official with Native Youth Olympics), joined by Stuart and Jake (NYO athletes).  Students continue to learn and refine their skills in a variety of native youth events in preparation for our Jr. NYO team at the end of the month.
We're in need of some additional caring adults for NOON DUTY SUPERVISORS at Ravenwood!  It pays $10 an hour for 11:00 - 1:30 daily.  If you are interested, contact the office at 742-3250.
