FROM THE MINISTER

The issue of “truth” has become a deeply significant issue in our country during the Trump presidency and its aftermath. I take counsel from Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) in his poem “Advice to Pilgrims.”  I share it with you not as being the definitive word on the subject but as containing some helpful suggestions.  Most importantly I suggest that you regularly attempt to catch your intuition “clean and stark naked.”

Advice to Pilgrims

That our senses lie and our minds trick us is true, but in general
They are honest rustics; trust them a little;
The senses more than the mind, and your own mind more than another man's.
As to the mind's plot, intuition—
Catch him clean and stark naked, he is first of truth-tellers; dream-clothed, or dirty
With fears and wishes, he is prince of liars.
The first fear is of death: trust no immortalist. The first desire
Is to be loved: trust no mother's son.
Finally I say let demagogues and world-redeemers babble their emptiness
To empty ears; twice duped is too much.
Walk on gaunt shores and avoid the people; rock and wave are good prophets;
Wise are the wings of the gull, pleasant her song.

- Robin Jeffers (1887-1962)

FIRST MONDAY DAYTIME BOOK CLUB
APRIL 5, 1:00 PM

Next Monday week, April 5th, the club will meet at 1:00, via Zoom, to discuss the novel, Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens. The book for May is Jacksonland by Steve Inskeep; for June, it is The Great Alone, by Kristin Hannah. If you are interested in joining the group, please email Barbara Robinson, at bjr2447@gmail.com. We try to select books that are available through our public library system.

6 Ways to Cut Out Plastic on Our Next Vacation

As we begin to think about traveling again, let’s consider ways to eliminate plastic on our next vacation. These six tips are from The Discoverer Blog.

1.  Opt for an eco-friendly resort that already uses less or zero plastic.
2.  Shop at a local farmer’s market (no pre-packaged produce).
3.  Bring a water purification device or reusable water bottle.
4.  Bring reusable utensils and food containers.
5.  Bring eco-friendly travel products (bamboo toothbrushes, silk dental floss, shampoo balls).
6.  Bring reusable shopping bags.

Your computer may go to sleep, but it’s still sucking up energy. Turn your computer and monitor off at the end of the day.
