Holland Against Hate

This week's news from:
 Shanghai Lady

Yesterday:

  • I voted in the Los Angeles County election in favor of Measure H to fund housing, treatment and other support of the homeless.
  • I marched in The Hague for Holland Against Hate, in protest of the #MuslimBan.
  • I donated money to The Guardian, a UK daily newspaper on whose independent investigative journalism I have come to rely.

Meanwhile back at the ranch.

My long-suffering publisher and I have gone through three sets of galley proofs, searching for typos and still finding sentences that need retweaking. If the typesetting gods look favorably on us, there will be an ebook version of The Dancing Girl and the Turtle this weekend, with the print version to follow in another two weeks.

Review copies of The Dancing Girl and the Turtle are now being distributed in the UK and even in China! Keep your fingers crossed that the reviews will be positive. Maybe even so glowing that we'll want to put some of these blurbs onto the back cover.

Just in time for the official book launch on April 1! Thanks to Beth Johnson and her fine staff, Boekhandel Van Rossum will host my book launch on Saturday, April 8 from 5 to 7pm. My publisher, Lynn Michell, will say a few words and I'll read some excerpts from The Dancing Girl and the Turtle. An official invitation coming soon!

For this week's blog post, I've written a craft article. Inspired by an essay written by Yiyun Li last month in The New Yorker, I've been thinking about language. The words we choose to communicate with our loved ones, commune with one's self or move others. The process, by definition harrowing, of exposing the nerve inside the words. Here it is: The Language of Blood.

Here are some of my other articles you might have missed:
Pig Knuckle Soup
The Good Immigrant
Through the Looking Glass: An Asian-American Identity
A New Progressive Narrative
Christmas Chinese-American Style
