Rock on, friend!

Back in July, I told you about Connie Chan, remember? She's the martial arts movie maven who inspired the character of Jane Dee in The Kowloon Jukebox. Not only was Chan the sweetheart of Hong Kong cinema, like Jane, she also crossed over into pop music. In this clip from one of Chan's 1960s films, she uses a folksy rendition of The Beatles' 8 Days a Week to distract a guard and escape her spacious, well-equipped prison cell. Gotta love 60s problem-solving!

NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF POP MUSIC

During the 1960s, Asian pop bands inspired by Western groups like The Beatles were harassed and even arrested by disapproving Communist regimes. Indonesia's first all-girl band Dara Puspita (Flower Girls) was a revolutionary influence, opening the door for more women in rock and arousing the fury of their government officials. Read more about Dara Puspita in THIS POST by Samantha Armatys at Howl and Echoes.

SPEAKING OF MUSIC AND REVOLUTIONARY GIRLS

The Kowloon Jukebox won't be out until September, but you can get in the mood now with the Spotify playlist.

DO ME A SOLID...

If you read Les Stone Cold Killers, and you enjoyed it, please take a moment to leave a review on Amazon.com. The best review is honest and lets readers know what to look forward to: plenty of action, fierce female protagonists, and dresses with pockets, among other things. Reviews make an enormous difference to indie authors. Thanks, pal!
