Kia ora Kāpiti

Welcome to your latest update from the team at the Kāpiti Coast District Council. Here's what you need to know this week.

Sorting stormwater

Winter is coming Kāpiti! With the cold usually comes the rain – and that means stormwater. We’re out and about every day doing our bit to manage our stormwater network and prevent flooding where possible, but we can’t be everywhere. So here’s some info on what we do in this space, and a few tips on how you can do your bit to help prevent flooding and protect your property. #lovemyneighbourhood

Carbon neutral target set

Last week our Council declared a climate change emergency and committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2025. We’re dedicated to doing our bit to provide an effective response to climate change and over the next few months we’ll look at what additional measures we need to put in place to reduce our carbon footprint.

Gray Ave & Beachwater Grove safety enhancements

Over the next 2-3 weeks we'll make some minor upgrades to improve pedestrian safety at the Gray Ave/ Beachwater Grove intersection in Paraparaumu. It’s a busy road and a popular crossing spot – particularly for students of Paraparaumu Beach School - so we’re installing a pedestrian island to make crossing safer. Please take care if you're in the area.

Civic and Community Awards – final reminder

Last call! Do you know a person or group who makes your community outstanding? Does someone in your neighbourhood or a group in the wider scene shine above the rest? Nominations are open for this year's Civic and Community Awards. For nomination forms and award criteria, visit our website. Nominations close this Friday - so don't delay.

Winter gardening at Mahara Place

Looking for some winter gardening tips to get your garden ready for spring? Pop along to Mahara Place, Waikanae on Thursday 13 June and hear from local gardening legend Kath Irvine, about how to make your garden thrive in our Kāpiti climate. Joining Kath will be a Council gardener and Waikanae Library librarians with their seed bank and origami seed pots. Find out more.

Mazengarb Reserve lighting

Over the next few weeks we’ll install LED lighting on two of the sports fields at the Mazengarb Reserve, Paraparaumu so more training can take place after sunset. The lighting marks the final step in our work to improve the fields for the winter sports season, which kicked off last year with drainage improvements.

Creative Crafts Day a success

We had an awesome array of local talent on show at the Creative Craft Day in Mahara Place, Waikanae last Wednesday. A big thanks to all the local store owners who shared their crafts and talents with the participants – check out some of the things they made!
