Kia ora Kāpiti

Welcome to your latest update from the team at the Kāpiti Coast District Council. Here's what you need to know this week.

Our home, our Kāpiti

Over the coming months, we'll be rolling out stories from across our community that celebrate the people and places that make Kāpiti a great place to call home – and some helpful tips and tricks to keep safe this summer while protecting our beautiful public spaces! Read more.

Delivering for our community

Our Kāpiti aquatic facilities offer heaps of fun, fitness, and activities throughout our District. Check out this video to see where you can swim and splash this summer, and what goes on behind the scenes to bring this top-notch service to the Kāpiti Coast.

Kāpiti Coast Airport to see DC3 return

Air Chathams is bringing its classic DC3 ZK-AWP aircraft back to Kāpiti as part of its summer series of scenic flights. It's only the second time our daily Kāpiti to Auckland flight provider is offering the region the DC3 experience since we welcomed them to Kāpiti last August. Flight bookings for this ’grand old lady of the sky’ are available on 11 and 12 January via Eventfinda.

Make the most of Mahara Place this summer

With the Mahara Place improvements now complete, the area has been transformed into a bright and vibrant open space for the community to come together, enjoy and relax.  There is a terraced area in the sunniest, most sheltered part of the plaza, reading gardens, and formal and informal seating areas. Make sure to head down this Saturday at 11am for carols, as well as a wacky hat parade/competition and a visit from Santa and his elves!

Summer reading programme

Registrations are open for the Kāpiti Kids Summer Reading Programme. The programme is for children in years 1-8, and involves completing a series of reading challenges over the summer break. Everyone who completes the programme receives a book and an invite to the celebration pool party. Pop into the Ōtaki, Waikanae or Paraparaumu Library to register!

Public Arts Panel applications

Do you have ideas and expertise you could offer to help us tell the stories of our district through our public art? We're calling for expressions of interest to fill two positions on our Public Art Panel. Candidates will need to have experience in commissioning public art, a knowledge of art history and the importance creativity plays in place-making and transformation, and an understanding of the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Find out more.

Waikanae River track works

Starting this week, we’ll be replacing the deck on the Waimeha Domain boardwalk at Waikanae Beach. This work will see over 100m of boardwalk deck replaced over two to three weeks. During this time the track will be closed during working hours but accessible in the evenings and during the weekend. Next week we’ll also be resurfacing the north bank of the Waikanae River trail land between the Expressway bridge and the Otaihanga Domain Oxbow footbridge. This work is expected to take three days and the track will remain open throughout. Thank you for your patience.

#stayandplay at our skate parks this summer

Did you know we have four different skate parks around Kāpiti? Which is your favourite? Upload a photo to Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #stayandplaykapiti to be in to win prizes! For more ideas on things to do if you're staying around Kāpiti this summer, visit our website.

Improvements to road safety in communities

We welcome the recent government announcement of changes to improve road safety in communities. The Tackling Unsafe Speeds programme prioritises the safety of all road users and will see speed limits around urban and rural schools reduced. Lower speed limits will make it easier and safer for kids to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Find out more.

We want to see your Kāpiti snaps!
