Kia ora Kāpiti

Welcome to your latest update from the team at the Kāpiti Coast District Council. Here's what you need to know this week.

Maramataka 2019/20 launch

Te Whakaminenga o Kāpiti and Kāpiti Coast District Council launched the annual maramataka - the Māori lunar calendar - last Friday at Whakarongotai Marae amidst much story-telling and celebration. This year's calendar honours the ART Confederation, which represents Te Atiawa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Toa Rangatira. ART Confederation members gifted all images used in this year’s maramataka. Calendars cost $10 each and will be available soon from all Kāpiti Coast District libraries and service centres. View the online version of this year’s maramataka here.

Pre-Election Report out now

Our 2019 Pre-Election Report is now live. Our Kāpiti Story provides an overview of the current position and direction of the Kāpiti Coast District to support the election process for the Council and community boards in October 2019.  Read the report and its supplement here.

Meet our Kāpiti Good Sorts

We are celebrating the local legends who have had their outstanding work recognised in this year’s Civic and Community Awards. This week, we recognise Sue Lusk, winner of the Civic Award. Not all heroes wear capes but this Kāpiti good sort is recognisable for her huge smile and endless efforts to make Waikanae a better place. Read more about Sue’s hard work in the community, as well as other Kāpiti Good Sorts, on our website.

Apply now for our waste reduction grants

Have you got a great idea for reducing waste? Applications for our waste levy funds, which support local waste minimisation projects and initiatives, are now open. There are two funding categories available – community projects and new technologies/seed funding. Visit our website for more details, including information on how to apply.

Finishing touches for Mahara Place

We’re now putting the finishing touches on our Mahara Place improvements. New hand rails with under-lighting have been fitted along the steps and this week, we’ll be installing anti-slip grips to the decks and steps. The bollards and bike racks in the Countdown carpark will also be re-instated. From mid-August, we'll apply a ‘bush hammer’ effect to concrete, pop a fresh lick of paint on the old Waikanae Library and install canopies above the stage.

Dog registration done and dusted

Bravo to all the Kāpiti dog owners who got their furry friends registered for the 2019/20 registration season - 7,079 dogs were logged by the close of this year's registration last week! If you haven't managed to register your canine companion yet, you still need to. Register online or call in to have a chat to one of our friendly customer service people for help.
