Welcome to your latest update from the team at the Kāpiti Coast District Council. Here's what you need to know this week.

Air Chathams celebrates one year of flying Kāpiti skies

Ka pai Air Chathams, celebrating one year flying Kāpiti skies today! Over the last 12 months Air Chathams has welcomed over 40,000 passengers travelling on approximately 1472 flights between Auckland and the Kāpiti Coast. Have you booked your tickets yet?

Nominations are in for this year’s elections

Nominations closed last Friday for the 2019 local body elections and it’s great to see so many people interested in shaping our District’s future. It’s now up to you to decide who will best represent our community’s interests around the Council table so check out our website for the list of candidates and voting information.

Update on Maclean Park refresh

We’ve now finished the last of the hard landscaping and most of the new lawn and planting areas at Maclean Park. The rest will be completed over the next few days and will be roped off until they are ready. You can now walk through the park and use the new BBQs. Read more about the Maclean Park refresh here.

Council receives top marks for NZTA audit

We’ve scored the best possible overall rating for our management of the District’s paths, roads and cycle ways in a recent audit by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The audit found that our efforts to improve safety, such as our intersection upgrades, revised speed limits and safety campaigns, have been well designed and implemented. Read more.

Open Mic poetry night this Friday

Join us this Friday, 5:30pm, at Paraparaumu Library to celebrate National Poetry Day. The night will begin with an open mic session where anyone can read or just listen to poetry, followed by the announcement of the poetry competition prize winners. Find out more.

Youth Council applications

Are you between the ages of 14 and 24, and passionate about your community and young people? Or do you know someone that fits this description that would make a fantastic Youth Council member? Applications for the Kāpiti Coast Youth Council close this Friday 23 August – find out more on our website.

Making Waves swim challenge on now

Join the Making Waves challenge at Coastlands Aquatic Centre! Your goal is to swim all eight channels and straits over the next 10 weeks. There’s some awesome weekly spot prizes up for grabs – including this week’s prize, a day trip for two adults to Kāpiti Island! Ask one of the friendly team members at the pool for more info.

Kāpiti good sorts – Peter Handford

This week’s local legend can be found taking care of business around Paekākāriki. Peter Handford is a true champion for his community and sustainable land management, stepping up to lend his expertise to all kinds of community projects. Margaret Road stormwater upgrade

Work to increase stormwater network capacity in Raumati is underway. The upgrade involves replacing a section of pipe below the ground on Margaret Road between the southern end of the Raumati Village shops and Victor Grove. At the same time, we’re widening the footpath on the eastern side of Margaret Road, from just south of Reddins Restaurant to Kāpiti College, to improve the pedestrian link to and from the village.
