Looking back at 2016

It was all about making new connections

The Mohammed Rafi Memorial Concert, Hüsnü Şenlendirici & Breathing Band at Klarinet Festival, Mogadishu Blues and other projects brought a new breath to the Breathing legacy. They were feasts of recognition for the audiences who are familiar with the specific sounds of music and eyeopeners for the new audiences. They were also results of connecting creatives of various styles and backgrounds.

Mohammed Rafi Memorial Concert - in attendance of family Mohd Rafi sahab
The family of the late great Mohammed Rafi travelled all the way from Bahrein to Amsterdam for the tribute concert by the Breathing Ensemble. Not only the family of Mohammed Rafi was present, but also the Ambassador of India to the Netherlands. We felt really honoured by their presence. Here you can see a compilation of the show.
Together with the Dutch Clarinet Festival Breathing invited none other than Turkish clarinet virtuoso Hüsnü Şenlendirici to the Bimhuis Amsterdam. And what a concert it was! Watch the compilation here.
With three concerts in The Hague, Amsterdam and Rotterdam the Breathing Ensemble gave birth to a new swinging concept. Mogadishu Blues is a celebration of Somalia's rich musical tradition non-Somali audiences are not familiar with. Breathing is now working on a continuation of Mogadishu Blues in the theatres near you and abroad.
Videoverslag de Nacht van de Tegenmacht
Breathing found a new partner in Vice Versa and programmed cultural content for their events. In 2017 Breathing and Vice Versa work on new collaborations. Vice Versa is the journalistic platform about International Cooperation. Vice Versa know what is going on and keeps readers informed of the latest developments, insights and analysis in the field of global cooperation. They do that throw independent journalistic reporting, in-depth background analysis and by providing a platform for provocative opinions. Watch the videoreport of one of the collaborations 'Nacht van de tegenmacht' (Night of the resistance)

In 2016 the Breathing moved to a new creative hotspot in Amsterdam. 'Ondertussen' is an an international group of artists and creative entrepreneurs from all over the world, united in a historical building at the Plantage Middenlaan. Breathing is working with Ondertussen on new concepts, events and a multi-media recording studio in 2017. Stay tuned!

We wish you all a musical and happy 2017!
