As each academic year comes to a close, we often think things will slow down a bit around Fairmount. And each spring, we realize that's probably not going to be the reality!

Just a few things in the coming months: our roof & A/C project began May 3, we have a College BBQ in the Park this weekend, Finals Week, a Young Adult Fellowship/Bible study, a fun family outreach event, and a College summer weekly Bible study!

Now onto the three things you need to know this month...Community Garden & Grounds, Fairmount VBS & Community Outreach, and a Fairmount Coffee Update! We also have a "bonus item" that we'd like to draw your attention to. The fourth item in this month's update is a thank you to all of our 2020 supporters!
Our Garden is coming along! We’re excited to watch our garden grow and would love to have your help this summer! We are looking for ongoing gardeners and also gardeners and volunteers for special projects and work days. Check out some pictures from our work day this past weekend. We planted veggies, strawberries, and installed our irrigation system.

Join us for our next work day, Saturday, May 22, 9am-12pm! You can learn more and RSVP here.

If you want to learn more, fill out this short interest form, and we will be in touch to see what role you can play in our Fairmount Community Garden Team.

Join our Community Garden Facebook Group to stay in the loop.

SAVE-THE-DATE FOR A FAIRMOUNT OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY

June 19, at Fairmount Coffee & in Fairmount Neighborhood
Hosted by Fairmount Ministries & King of Kings Lutheran Church

This summer, Fairmount Ministries is partnering for the third time with King of Kings Lutheran Church (Kansas City, MO) to bring the Fairmount Neighborhood Vacation Bible School!

This year, we will host a one-day VBS event that will be a combination of community outreach through the local Juneteenth celebration (including a parade and a kids event in a nearby park) as well as a meal and VBS experience in the Fairmount Coffee west lawn.

King of Kings will send a team of Jr. & Sr. High missionaries to lead the Bible story activities, skits, and praise songs. Our role is to provide volunteer support for the day.

This is a great way for your church, youth group, or small group to get involved with our ministry and help us to share the love and message of Jesus with the families in our backyard! We are not sure of all the details yet, but please mark your calendar for June 19 to volunteer alongside us! As details unfold, we will email out additional information.

In the meantime, if you are interested in partnering with us, you can call us at 316-684-5224 x2 or email us at fairmountministries@gmail.com.

**Please note: that if you receive The Perk or if you are a local church member, you may have read a bulletin announcement recently about Family Fest...this event has been evolved into God's Wonder Lab: A VBS Experience.

It’s hard to believe that four years ago, we were in the midst of the construction and remodel of our facility and that the Grand Opening of Fairmount Coffee Co. was just around the corner! WOW! It’s been an amazing few years!

We are thankful that during the midst of the pandemic, we were able to keep the coffeehouse open for most of the year. Though we faced hardship, including having to close our doors to in-person seating for an extended period of time, laying off several staff members, and slower traffic, we were blessed immensely as the community rallied around us and showed up to support Fairmount through the pandemic.

In fact, over the past several months, we have been busier than ever! We are thankful for your continued prayers and support as we seek to create a space where people can be fed spiritually, physically, and relationally.

Here are a few things we think you should know about Fairmount Coffee:

Faces of Fairmount: Over the past few months, our Marketing Assistant, Carley, and our Director of Development, Jenn, have been working on sharing the Faces of Fairmount. These are fun interviews that spotlight our staff, students, and volunteers. If you've missed them, you can meet some of the members that make up the Fairmount Family by visiting #FacesofFairmount.

Summer Hours: Will take effect on Monday, May 17.

Seasonal Drinks: "I am enjoying the Rose Cardamom Latte. Rose is a flavor that is surprisingly good in a latte, and the cardamom gives it a unique twist and mellows it out. It's not overly sweet, and I love it iced! But it's also delicious hot!" says Paige, our Coffeehouse Manager & Director of Outreach.

2020 was a year that brought many unique challenges for all of us, didn't it? Yet, as we sit here on, hopefully, the tail-end of this pandemic, we sit in a new perspective. From a perspective of gratitude, even amongst the trials, pain, and grief that this past year provided, we also see how much we have. And we give thanks for the many blessings we have been given this past year.

  • We were able to stay open most of 2020.
  • We were able to continue to provide a space (whether in-person or virtual) for young people to be in Christian community.
  • Our staff and students remained healthy, and those that contracted Covid-19 had minor cases.
  • We learned to adapt easily as we transitioned our Bible studies and groups to a virtual setting.
  • In a year of isolation, we discovered new ways to reach out to our community and loved ones.
  • We learned that sometimes we just have to sit in the mess of the world together and that we don't always have to have the right answer...sometimes it's just about listening.
  • Because ALL of us walked through 2020 and experienced its challenges, we were able to connect with the people who call Fairmount home on a completely new and deeper level.
  • We were reminded over and over again of God's faithfulness, and even though we can't grasp the reasons behind many of the events of 2020, we know that our God will never leave or forsake us.
Among our thanksgivings, we give thanks for the many of you who continued to support our ministry in 2020! We want to ask you to take a moment and pray a prayer of thanksgiving for the people, congregations, clubs, and organizations that generously blessed our ministry in 2020. Please note:  We inadvertently missed a friend and supporter in our latest print newsletter, Ministry in the Midst of the Pandemic: Thanksgivings & Blessings. Lutheran Church Extension Fund - Kansas & Oklahoma generously blessed us with a grant last summer to host our fall outreach Party on the Patio. We apologize for our oversight.

We shared a new email in April called Stories of Fairmount. It is a bit like Faces of Fairmount but in this email edition, we share stories of how God is working amongst us. In this past issue, we shared two stories, one about Love and a Prayer and the other about Netwon's Third Law.

If you missed it, you can catch up by clicking the issue to the right!
