Baptist Heritage Weekend

Nov. 5, 2016
Emmanuel Baptist Church, Providence
9:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m.

“Directing Traffic at the Intersection of Church and State” will be Mr. Brent Walker’s topic. To which some might reply “There’s traffic between church and state?” It is not your every Sunday sermon topic. Many of us assume that the issues of “church and state” have long been resolved. “You can worship in any way or is a right guaranteed by our constitution”. It is also a value that we assume as a part of our Baptist heritage! But as we observe current discussions as diverse as marriage equality, prayer in school, immigration, health care policy and school vouchers, we begin to see that there is “traffic” indeed. What then is our role, as contemporary Baptist churches in this centuries long discussion?
For 20 years, Mr. Walker has brought both a lawyer’s and a pastor’s mind to the significant legal complexities that the relationship between all faith communities and all governance entail. As Executive for the Baptist Joint Committee since 1999, he was fully engaged in shaping the legal infrastructures of our nation. His work will be recognized and celebrated as a part of our Baptist Heritage Weekend. His work represents our Baptist faith engaged in the realities of our world.
At this unique and significant event Mr. Walker’s service will be recognized by our national leaders: Sen Jack Reed, American Baptist Churches, USA interim Exec. Minster, Dr. Susan Gillies, ABC of MA Exec. the Rev. Dr. Mary Miller, Dr. Donald Farish and Dean Michael Yelnosky of RWU, (as well as some yet to be confirmed) accompanied by our local Baptist and interdenominational leaders. During the celebrative lunch, we will be visited by Roger Williams himself.
We as the RI Baptist Heritage Center have offered this event to benefit all parts of our denomination and all of our congregations. We know this will be an edifying time together.
See the available Registration form. Please register early!

Calling All Retired Ministers!

As a minister, now retired, the Together in Ministry Group: Spiritual Formation in the Senior Years invites you to join them each third Thursday of the month throughout the year.  The purpose of this group is to help us stay in contact with the American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island, our Region offices, and our colleagues, as well as give support to one another as we adjust to changes in our life and continue to nurture ourselves spiritually.  Our fall program begins October 20.   Over the following weeks, we will be reading and discussing the book, The Gift of Years by Joan Chittister.  In it she invites us to "embrace older age as a natural part of life that is both active and contemplative, productive and reflective and deeply rewarding."  Books will be available at the meeting on Thursday, October 20 at Lawrence (the main building).   Questions?  Call Donna Maggi-401-364-6518 or Carlos Mooney - 508-222-5070.

Communication is Key

The Region Office is always working to update and upgrade our communications network. At the present time we have three main ways to communicate with you and your congregations: the weekly E-notes, our Facebook page, and periodic pastors’ e-mails.
You can help us extend our reach and effectiveness by:
  1. Letting us know if you are not receiving any of these three items
  2.  Providing e-mail addresses of any and all church members who would like to receive the weekly  E-notes, and
  3.  “Like” us (American Baptist Churches of RI) on Facebook.  You can do this right now by simply clicking “here

The MissionWorks Conference is rapidly approaching.

Key speakers at this year’s MissionWork’s include Rev. Sharon Koh, the newly elected Executive Director of International Ministries of ABCUSA. Rev. Koh will share her vision and her passion for world mission endeavors as we partner with American Baptists around the globe.  In addition (as if that were not enough!) the closing speaker at this year’s event is our own, Rev. Jabulani McCalister, senior pastor at Calvary Baptist Church, Providence.

You can download a reproducible brochure here.  Use copies of this brochure to encourage your fellow church members to join you in attending this year’s MissionWorks.  For registration, use the attached form.

Ready for Some Hockey?

American Baptist Churches are invited to join the fun Friday, October 14, as the Providence Bruins battle the Albany Devils (surely Baptists can support battling the “Devils”!) at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center. Download the attached flyer for a special deal on tickets and give-aways.
