MESD Gardens Grow Kids and Tomatoes

From Suzanne Briggs:
Arata Creek Garden Bed - Spring, 2016
It’s time to plan and plant. Last year MESD integrated vegetable gardening into its curriculum at several schools and initiated a staff garden at the Ainsworth Administration Building site. All of the gardens produced wonderful results: healthy foods plus learning and social opportunities for both staff and students. Schools include: Arata Creek, Burlingame Creek, Donald E Long, Helensview, and Albertina Kerr Subacute.

Gardens are a special place to slow down, reflect and be grateful for miracles of growing our own food. Kids are gleeful to get outside and get their hands in the dirt. Perhaps this is the year to try a vegetable garden in your own backyard. No backyard? A container garden is a fine portable alternative.

At the Ainsworth Garden, employees visited and tended the garden on breaks, during lunch hours and before and after work. The 2017 garden plans include grab and go salad bar crops including: radishes, lettuce, cherry tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, sweet peppers, snow peas, basil and strawberries.
